A COUPLED TOAST.

CONTROVERSY RAISED. (by cabw.— press association—coptmqht.) (australian and n.z. cable association.) LONDON, April 26. The "Daily Express" says that the Lord Mayor's action in respect to the Catenian banquet, which he declined to attend because the loyal toast was placed after the toast of the Pope, has raised a storm of controversy.

The Catcnians themselves arc divided. Some declare that they whole-heartedly agree with, the Lord Mayor. Canon Howlett, Administrator of Westminster Cathedral, on the other hand, says that tho toast is simply tho historic toast of the Church and State. As Catholics in Great Britain cannot recogniso the Church of England, it has been the custom for two generations to name the Pope with the Sovereign, which docs not imply disloyalty; indeed it means redoubled loyalty by coupling it with our "spiritual obedience to the Pope." The founder and hon. secretary of' the Royal Society of St. George, Mr Howard Buff,' pays tribute to the Lord Mayor as being most liberal-minded, and supports his action entirely. "I would not," he adds, "attend anywhere where tho Pope's name precedes tho King's."
