BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council mot last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), and Crs. F. Ward, F. D. Muirson, J. C. Scott, VT. R. Gshagan, H. A. Glasson, and .f. W. Buxton.

On the motion of the Mayor, notes of thanks were accorded the councillors who were not seeking re-election.

The Municipal Electrical Department, stated that the transformer at the junction of Richmond terrace and Jervois street is now fully loaded. The Department asked whether the Council was prepared to dedicate the triangular plot of land at the junction of Richmond terrace and Jervois street and Estuary road for the purpose of a substation site.

The matter was referred to tho incoming Council.

The Tramway Board wrote regarding matters in connexion with the alleged speed of busfie and the directing of bus traffic: also in regard to the Avon river bridge, and in connexion with the raising of the Lines of the Esplanade tramway track. The letters were referred to the committee of the incoming Council.

Mr J. A. Flesher forwarded a letter from the Canterbury Board of Education, in which the Board states that it was considered unwise to .abandon entirely the school site nf four acres at. .Tellicoe street, as in all probability it would be required at some future date. The letter was referred to the committee of the incoming Council The Works Committee reported that a letter had been received from tie Heathcote County Council regarding repairs tc the Bower bridge. It was resolved to reply to tho effect that tho Council disclaimed all liability in the matter. •'.

It was decided to hold over discussion on matters relating to the Avon river bridge.

. It was recommended that the incoming Council provide for the expenditure in connexion with the electric lighting ..of th« sports ground out of the lighting account ii. this year's estimates. Tho question of the utility of the manual fire engine now stationed at Korth Beach wag referred to the Fire Prevention Committee for Teport. The overseer was instructed to have asphalt ipaths repaired in Bowhill road, and also in Bawson street.

Tha ; Finance Committee, in their report, recommended that Dr. Meikle bo refused permission to place a wooden bridge over the channel in front of his residence; that Mr T. 0. Alexander be *tafoTmcd that Mrs Alexander instructed Jlr Dean to carry out the work of drainage in Saltairo street, and undertook liability for payment for same; that the matter of insuring members of tie Volunteer Fire Brigade bo held over pending further information: that tho Council disclaims any liability in tho matter of th» accident to i/h E. Arnott.

Mayor reported that tie sum of £2O 15s had been collected at the Anzac service towards tho soldiers' memorial fund. On the motion of Cr. Gahagan a hearty and unanimous vote of thanks was accorded the Mayor for the manner m which ho had carried' out his duties. Ct. Muirson, who is not seeking re-elec-tion,' spoko in similar terms. ■ In reply, Mr Gamble said that if his work in Council had met with the approval of his councillors, then he was well repaid, and he thanked councillors for the very kind ■things they had said about him, which ha thoroughly appreciated.
