GREYMOUTH, April 27
Mr B. R. Sword, late District Traffic Manager at Greymouth, leaves tomorrow with his family for Christchurch.
Mr J. W. Greenslade, Deputy Mayor returned from Nelson last evening.
Mr E. Cook, of Kumara Junction, has left for Queensland, whero he will spend a holiday of several months', duration. Mr C. R. W. Brooks, West Coast representative of Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen, has received an appointment RtChristchurch, and will be succeeded fit Greymouth by Mr Tennent.
The Rev. and Mrs Robiiißon were- welcomed to Reefton at a social In tho Wesley Schoolroom, attended liy representatives of all denominations.
Wedding. The marriage was solemnised at Knox Church, Reefton, of Miss Charlotte Hunter, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Hunter, of The Terrace, Reefton, to Mr Cecil W. Stobie, of Takaka. Tho Rev. J. Watt officiated. The bride woro a dress of Brussels lace, petalled _ with georgette and trimmed with brilliant ornaments. Miss Grace Lines was bridesmaid and Mr Ivan Stobie best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at Joseph's Tea Rooms, and the happy couple left later for Christchurch.
Sawmill Hand's Death. Alfred William Kenning, a sawmill hand at Ngahere, died last evening at the Greymouth River Hospital, from the effects of rat poison. He was admitted on Saturday evening and was then apparently suffering from the effects of a drinking bout. His wife was absent at Hokitika, where she is staying with relatives.. The deceased, who was 45 years of age, was well-known in the district. Ho had been attended by Dr. Ray, of Blackball. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
Greymoirth ScSool. The annual mooting of householders in connexion with tlio election of the Greymouth School Committee wan held to-night. Present: Messrs J. Tennent (chairman), K. Barrowman, H. Herring, P. Beck, J. Weaver and T. B. Batty. In its annual report the outgoing committee stated that owing to several minor epidemics during the year the attendance up to December 31st was not as good as usual. Tho averages were as follows: —Main School 548 out .of a roll of 597, and Blaketown 96 out of 110. Work in Standard VI. had been disorganised owing to the non-appointment of a permanent teacher, but the: class made.a satisfactory showing at the proficiency examinations. A loss had been suffered by the retirement on • superannuation of Miss Skoglund after thirty years' service. The annual balancesheet; disclosed that the receipts .were £434 13s lid, ' and the; expenditure £275 16s sd. The chairman said that the sum of £l2s.was still owing to.the Board ■■ on the heating system, and an endoavonr would be made to raise the amount by a united effort. The report - and balance-sheet were adopted. The following committeo was then declared elected:—Messrs J. Tennent, J. Weaver, P. Beck, H. Herring, J. Lamberton, T. B. Batty, R. J. Williams, W. Scott and B. .Barrowman. The retiring secretary, Mr W. F. G. Pullin, expressed his Tegrot at having to decline renomination owing to residential disqualification. Mr Tennent voicod tho appreciation of members of Mr Pullin's work.
Replying to a vote of thanks, Mr Allison, rector, said the school was not easy to conduct, owing to the continuous changes in tho staff, which was probably caused by teachers morcly using the school as a stepping stone to promotion. The meeting decided to ask the Board to require teachers to stay in a position for two years, except in exceptional circumstances.
At a subsequent mooting of the committee the following officers were elected: —Chairman, Mr Tennent; secre-tary-treasurer, Mr Lambertdn. The resignation of Miss S. Donnellan as assistant-mistress was received.
A. and P. Association. Mr J. Dimmick presided at a meeting of the Westland A. and P. Association. The secretary (Mr J. J. Jannan) reported on the work at the recent conference at Christchurch.
Mr C. S. Dalgleish, Government Fields Distructor, addressed the meeting on tho proposed winter school for farmers from July 13th to 18th. After discussion it was decided to ascertain the amount of support likely to be accorded the school. It was resolved to abandon the annual show, which had been postponed owing to the epidemic.
Obituary. Mr Wm. Hooper Teagne, a well-known resident of Stafford, has died there at the age of 78 years. He was predeceased by his wife, but leaves two sons and one daughter.
Mining Matters. The Weatport Coal Company shipped 5632 tons of coal last week, and the Westport-Stoekton Coal Company 2521 tons. Farmer Killed. A farmer named Jas. Rait was killed to-day at Owen Junction, near MurcMson, through the overturing of a dray. The deceased was 54 years of age, and married.
