CANCER RESEARCH.
WORK PROCEEDING IN AUSTRALIA.
The Australian Minister of Health (Sir Neville Howsc), who has been giving close attention to tho question of cancer research, and, in particular, to the directions in which the £SOOO voted by Parliament for this purpose could be most profitably expended, stated last week that he had been anxious that this moDcy should be spent to the greatest profit without devoting any portion of it to the creation of new machinery. After enquiring exhaustively into work now being carried on and posals for new work, lie had decided to allocate the available funds to assist the following lines of investigation:— The University of Sydney, which has in hand researches into the effect of various forms of electrical rays upon the method of growth of living cells; the University of Melbourne, which has undertaken an enquiry intended to demonstrate whether any relationship exists between the occurrence of cancer and the response of the body to certain bacterial infections; and the University of Adelaide, which now has an enquiry proceeding into the factors controlling the growth of living celJs. Sir Neville Howse has decided to make grants to enable these researches to be continued on a more extended basis than lias hitherto been possible. In addition, an investigation is about to be undertaken at the Commonwealth serum laboratories, aimed at discovering the laws underlying the methods of growth of microscopic cells in response to various forms of irritating foreign agents.
