SHIPPING NOTES.

The ferry steamer Wahine docks here today for cleaning and painting. She sails at the usual time to-night.

The Wingatui is due t/>day from Auckland via Wellington. She is to sail to-morrow for Buuedin, and is due,back, via Timaru, on May 7th to load for Auckland. Tho Breeze should be here this morning from Timaru. She is to sail this afternoon for Wellington and Wanganui. ■ The Kaiapoi is to be dispatched on Thursday for AuckUnd direct. The Waipori is due on Thursday from Westporfc with coal. The Kawatiri, with coal from Newcastle, is due to-morrow. The Kamo is timed to load here to-morrow for Napier and Giaborne. She is to sail in the afternoon for Napier direct. The Holmdale is cspectcd on Thursday from Timaru to load for Wellington and Wanganui. The Zita. arrived oarly yesterday morning from Waitara. She loads general cargo for the return trip, sailing to-morrow night. The Wanaka' should be here to-morrow from Ihinedin. She is to sail on Thursday for Auckland, via Wellington.

mittec Mr Lowery was elected chairman and Mr Colvillc secretary. W.EA. A meeting was held last night for the purpose of considering the question of the formation of a workers' educational class in Ashburton. The speakers were Mr A. H. Tocker, of Canterbury College, and Mr Geo. Manning, Dominion secretary of the Association. The Mayor (M*r R. Galbraith) presided over a good attendance. Mr Tocker apologised for the absence of .Professor Shelley, and said that some people regarded the movement as a "Bed Fed." Association, but he could assure the audience that this was not the case. The formation of a class at Ashburton had been considered for some time. ' He then went on to speak upon the control of industry. Mr Manning addressed the gathering upon education and citizenship, showing how a sound knowledge of the former was essential in the competition of the latter. That a W.E.A. class be formed way moved by Mr C. G. Andrews, and sec onded by Mr H. M. Jones, and carried unanimously. . ' Mr E. Loftus was appointed secrc, tary, and it was decided to- meet next week," when Mr Tocker will lecture oi economics. . . '

The Wairua is timed to load on Thursday for Blenheim. • 'Jihe C. and D. steamer Port Augusta* which has been undergoing minor repairs here, is to sail to-day for Dunedin. The Port Brisbane is due to-morrow from Timaru to continue Homeward loading. The calm is due to-day from Wellington and is'to sail this afternoon for Bluff, Dunedin, and Timaru. The Cygnet sails to-night for Kaikoura, Motuetei, and Nelson.

Captain. E. Davies is in command of the Shaw-Savill liner Athenic, .' now discharging London caigo at Auckland. Captain A. T. Norton, formerly master'of the Maheno, has transferred to the Mocraki.

Cable news received-by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the steamer Golden Cape left Newport- News on April 17th. en route from St. John to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. According to a cablegram received by the New Zealand Shipping Company the steamer Doonholm was duo at Sydney (C.8.), on Wednesday last to load for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Doonholm will be followed by *he steainer , Tienicja, which is due at the Cape Breton port on June 10th to load,for New Zealand.

LEVUKA HELD UP. SYDNEY, April 27. The inter-State steamer Levuka is held up, owing to the crew not being 'up to the full complement. (Received April 27th, 11.10 pjn.) The crow of the Levuka has been paid off and the vessel- laid up indefinitely.
