♦- TIMARU. Social and Personal. Mrs E. J. Le Cren (Maori HilD motored back from Hanmcr and Christchurch on "Wednesday. Miss Doris JRic-kman (Church street West) left on Wednesday for the Hermitage. Miss M. Hay (Cadogan) is the guest of Mrs James Grant (Grays Hills). The Misses Bowen (Ricearton) returned from the Hermitage on Wednesday and left yesterday on a visit to Mrs John Studholme (.Coldstream).
Miss -Hunter-Wcstou (Hightliorne) hit for Dunedin on Monday. Miss Kerr, who was visiting Timaru, returned- to Dunediij yesterday. Mrs Wig ley and Miss Garland (Park lane) and Mrs L. Wigley and family (Highfield) are at Mt. Cook. ' Mjis McKenny (Christchurch) wh£> was in Dunedin, is now the guest of Mrs George -Webster (Nelson terrace). Mrs A. A. Scott and Miss Maud Wilson (Bidwell street) left yesterday for Christchurch.
Mrs Hamilton Elmslie has gone back to Omiri after a visit to Mrs E. Harper (Wai-iti road).
Mr and Mrs Maurice Harper and Miss Harper ;(Lake Heron) arrived in Timaru on Monday and have gone into residence at Kinmoull (Wai-iti road) for the winter months.
The Hou, Mrs Guy Stopford (England) who was-with Mrs "R. Gillies (Birtley. Upper llangib*»-ta> arrived yesterday in Timaru on a visit to Mrs Melville Jamieson (Otumarama). . Passengers to Mount Cook yesterday were Mr and Mrs Murcill Smith (Sydney), Mr and Mrs Nicholson, Mr G. Reeves (Christchurch), and Miss Baynard Smith (Auckland).
Mr and Mrs Sutherland and son Gangland) r.etiwncd yesterday and Messrs Williamson (2) went on to Queenstown.
The Weather. Following a, hot nor'-wcsterly wind on Wednesday night a southerly sprang up yesterday morning, bringing with it the rain much needed by the farmers throughout .the .distTictw iSeattered showers fell in Timaru all day yesterday, tho total fall at G p.m. being 20 points.
H.M.S. Duncdin. ' TI.M.S, Dunedin, flagship of the N.Z. Division pf the Royal Navy, is duo at Timaru. from Oamaru about 11 a.m. to-day. and will remain in port about seven days, .during which time she will probably bo thrown open for public inspection. On arrival the captain and officers will be welcomed bv the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace). ' ' "
WAIMATE. .At the monthly meeting of the. Ladies.' Benevolent Society there-were present: —Mesdames G. J. Shackleton (in the chair), D. Sutherland, S. I. Adams and C. Coventry. Six applications for assistance were granted. Mesdames Manchester and' Adams were appointed visitors for the month.
The dry spell lately experienced in Waimatc has broken, a steady rain having set 'in. The dry spell has been a long one. Farmers were beginning to think winter feed would be scarce. If • the • rain - continues the prospects for feed for stock through the winter months will be brighter.
..Temuka bowl.erg arrived at Waimate yesterday morning to play,for the..Bristol Cup, which Waimate won at Timatu qn>': Saturday. Bain began early in the morning, however,, and as .there was no sign of its ceasing the game was not played. It is likely that the Temuka team will not be able to visit Waimate again' this season. ' At the monthly meeting of the Waimate Hospital Cooimittee last night there were present: Messrs W. Geddes (chairman), W. Beer, G. Dash, T. Brown, I. Andrew, E. Sinclair and the medical superintendent (Dr. E. C. Hayes). The chairman's statement showed receipts for the month £l5O 6s sd. Miss E. Hendrey had'..;.been appointed office assistant. The return of patients disclosed that there were 37 patients in the institution; 42 had been admitted during the month, making the total treated 79. The total number of patients discharged was 46. Sister Webster's resignation was , accepted. The Medical Superintendent.stated that 'the Hospital was quiet. The-only case
of infantile paralysis admitted had been discharged. The Finance Committee reported that the estimated expenditure had been exceeded, but the estimated income had been exceeded also, and the amount in hand was £SO.
TEMUKA. Mr G. L. Twentyman (Seadown) reports the rainfall for March as follows: —March 4th, .SS: 6th, .04: 11th, .01; Uth, .01; isth, .02; 28th,'.03; making a total of .C9in for the month.
On Wednesday evening a deputation, representing all sections of the town! waited upon Cr. Cartwright. to ask him to accept nomination fior-the Mavoraltv. Deputy-Mayor Evans introduced the deputation and . explained their object He recalled that Cr. Cartwright had been-a member of the Borough Council for ten years, had occupied the position of Deputy-Mayor for four years, and had carried out his duties to" the satisfaction of all. .Cr. Cartwright, who was received with loud applause, said that if anyone did not feel proud on such occasions as these, they were not human. He could hardly find words adequatclv to express his thanks.' He fully appreciated the action of those present, and he felt that he could hardly refuse their request. He paid a high "tribute to the magnificent work of the present Mayor and Mayoress, whose hearts were wholly and solely for the welfare of the town". The Deputy-Mayor, on behalf of the deputation, thanked Cr. Cartwright for his prompt and favourable answer, and if it should come to a poll, he said that they would see that he was elected.
