OBITUARY.

MR J. P. HE AX. There died on February 27th, 1923, in Orcllia, Canada, Mr John D. Hean, late of Kaiapoi. The late Mr Hean was a resident pf Orcllia for about 12 years aiul was well-known in the town. He was born at Kaiapoi in New Zealand, and was a member of the lirst New Zealand Contingent in the South African War. He' was rejected for service in the Great War. In 1004 the late Mr Hean went to England, where he married Miss M. Yorke, of Tottenham, North London, and resided in England for a number of years, leaving for Canada in KU.°,. He is survived by Mrs Hean and a son, John, also two brothers and five sisters. Of the brothers and sisters, one brother, Mr Fred Hean, resides in Vancouver, and the others arc in New Zealand. They arc Mr R. B. Hean, of Lower Kiccarton, Christchurch, Mrs E. T. Martin, Tennyson street, Christchurch, Mrs F. Baxton, Wellington, Mrs E. Claridge, Worcester Street, Christchurch. Mrs F. C. Price, Spreydon, and Miss E. Hean, Da<field. PROFESSOR ARTHUR DENDY. A Press Association message from Wellington announces the death of Dr. Arthur Dendy. Professor Dendy, F.R.S., D.Sc. (Manchester), F.L.S., F.Z.S., honorary member of the New Zealand Institute, was born and was Professor of Biology at Canterbury College from 1893 until 1903, when he was succeeded by Dr. Chas. Chilton. Leaving Canterbury College, the late Dr. Dendy was appointed to tho .South African College at Capo Town, and from there was appointed to tho Chair of Zoology at King's College, University of London, which position he, held at the time of his death. A great part of Dr. Dcndy's work was iu researches into tho structure and development of sponges, and ho examined and reported on these for the Challenger and subsequently for many Antarctic expeditions. Of greater interest to New Zealand are Dr. Dondy's observations on tho biological position and development of tlic tuatara. Among his publications is a text-book on Evolutionary Biology, which is at present in uso in the senior classes at Canterbury College, and at many otherv colleges. Professor Dendv leaves a widow, a eon, and two'daughters.
