EURYTHMIC DEMONSTRATION.
The president, Mi- Alfred Merton,_.and council of the Canterbury Society of Professional Musicians (Incorporated) on Thursday night entertained a large number of the musical che'es 01 Chrisichurch at a demonstration and lecture on curythmics, given by Miss Jessica Benham end ProUssor J. Shelley at the Jcllicce Hall. Professor Shelley, who» was introduced by the president, give a short history cf the art, speaking of the wiiy in which Oacques Daicrozc developed his syateni for cultivating appreciation of rhythm as a basis of artistic culture!. Ho dealt with the extraordinary growth of the movement during the past ten years and explained in detail the chief elements of the system. Their intellectual bearing was illustrated by Miss Benham and her sister. Professor Shelley said that Miss Benham was tho only fully trained exponent of the art in New Zealand. Her demonstration was much appreciated by these present. Mr Lance Lcwin acted ai accompanist during the display.^ The guests were received by Madirrte Gowor Burns and Mr Sidney Williamson, and the hostesses for the evening wero Madame Gower Burns, Miss AVoodhouso and Miss Hanham.
