• Hospital Board Election. Mr P. Mrßao. an ex-member of the Hospital Board, will bo a candidate for the Lytt-elton-Woolston Sumner combined districts at the next Board election. Magistrate/ s Court. Mr Y. G. Norton, J.P.. presided at the Ma si st rate's Court yesterday. Joseph James Gallagher was charged with being drunk ,in Oxford street, also with obstructing Constable E. A. " Irwin in the execution of bis duty, and further with, wilfully damaging a pair of trousers, valued at 255, the property of the New Zealand Government. He pleaded guilty to nil charge;.". Tho TSen-li convicted and discharged accused on tho first charge, fined him S" for obstructing tho constable, and ordered him to make good tho damage to tho const.3blo's trousers. James Smith. a second offender for drunkenness, was fined ]o<.. Personal. Spindler. late slationmaster at Lyllolton, who has retired on superannuation. Mr J. Garrard. LyMolton manager for Messrs Kinsey and Co., lu»J., presided. The chairman said that Ihp shipping and mercantile firms connected with tho port had decided that they could not allow Mr Rpindler to leavo the port without making known to him the high regard in which he. as stationmaster. had been hold during the fire years he had been in Lyttclton. They could not fail to recognise Mr Rpindler'? exceptional ability in dealing villi the shipping of what was admittedly a difficult port to work. Tho methods provided by tho Kailway Department for working Lyltelton had long ngo hocomo obsolete, nnd the station - master who came to Lyttclton in these days was up against tremendous difficulties. Iu their guest that afternoon they had a man who had an obsession for work. Mr Spindler had worked nil hours of (he day and night at rush poriods, and was not afraid to shake up the Christchurch end when trucks were not coming to hand freely enough. His work during the. unfortunate railway strike of last year, when he worked tho port almost singlehanded, was of great assistance to the shipping firms in particular. At all times Mr Splndler had shown a disregard of red tape methods, and this fact was much appreciated by those whoso business brought them iu daily contact with him. Messrs F. W. Partridge (Vacuum Oil Co.), (i. Ferguson (R. B. Beale and Co.), and'H. L. Penney (Canadian Government Line) also spoke in appreciation of Mr Spindler's good work. Mr Garrard then asked the guest's acceptance of two easy chairs for himself and Mrs Spindler, and a case of pipes and n silvermounted .wallet containing a substantial sum in notes, at the same time wishing him many joars of'well-earned rest in retirement. ; Mr Spindlcr responded, thanking those present for the gifts and for the expressions of goodwill.
