Personal At a combined meeting of the Upper Ashburton and Longbeach Road Boards, held yesterday, Mr J. B. Mecking was unanimously appointed clerk to tho two Boards from ten applications. Tho chairman of the Upper Ashburton. Road Board, Mr A. Horsey, was yesterday granted three months' leave of absence in view of his anticipated trip to England nnd the United States. At the conclusion of the meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board Mr Horsey took the opportunity of presenting Mr A. A. Fooks, who had resigned the position of clerk-engineer, with a case of pipes and a silver-mounted walking-stick, as a token of the esteem in which he was held during his term of eight years with the Board. Allenton Football Club. A meeting of the Allenton Football I Club was held on Thursday night, when i the president, Mr R. Houston, presided. It was decided,to open an account in the Building Society. The election of the General Committee resulted: —Messrs A. Heseltine, C. Brosnahan, R. Bushel!, and G. Cartwright; coach, Mr Dobson. It was decided to commence practice on Saturday, March -Sth. The gift of a ball by the president was accepted j with thanks. It was decided to enter one junior and one third grade team in the competitions. Upper Ashburton Road Board. At tiie monthly meeting of the Upper Ashburton. Road Board, held yesterday afternoon, there were present: —Messrs A. Horsey (chairman), IF. Morris, R. Houston, "S. H. Lill, E. J. Mulligan, and S. Lemon. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £1290 lfls Gd. It was resolved that a rate of J of a penny be struck for the coming year. Mr Lill stated that a great den 1 of tracking on the part of haulers was occurring on the Maronan road, and the County Inspector, should be requested to take steps to prevent the practice. It was resolved to draw the inspector's attention to the matter. Bowling. In the Ashburton County Bowling Association's match with tho Christchurch Centre, to be played at Eakaia to-day, the Eakaia and Mcthven Bowling Clubs are each supplying two rinks, while the following have been selected to represent the Ashburton Club:-I—A. 1 —A. There have been some specially good drafts of lambs leave the district lately for the freezing works. The road roller and tho grader belonging to the Ashburton County Council's road plant have worked up to about halfway between Green's corner and Alford Forest, but the work is expected to be discontinued on this road at any time. Tho job don© is most favourably commented upon and residents wish that it wer© to be continued on some more of the local roads. I For some considerable time a bull has been alarming residents in part of the district, and on several occasions he has highwayman-like held up traffic on the road near the Black bridge. His latest feat of daring was just recently to hold np two well-known dignatories in the persons of a constable and a -lawyer. The following will represent tho local B team in their tennis match to-day against To Marae, at Ashburton: —Miss Eva Wood, Mrs Becklc'y, Miss Lorna Wood, Mrs Jones, Messrs McClimont, N. Hood, R. Webster, and 11. Fisher. There will also be played the unfinished set in last week's match as well as the nnplaycd set a week before. RAKAIA. A special meeting of th© Rakaia School Committee was hekl in StMark's Schoolroom on Thursday ©vexing. There were present Rev. A. &. Morrison (chairman), Rev. E. N. Blnkiston, Messrs J. England, A. S F. Kennett, A. Oliver, and C. Evison. The Canterbury Education Board wrote recommending the appointment of Miss Iris South as assistant mispress in place of Miss 'Willis, it waa decided to confirm th© appointment, and to suggest that Miss South take up her duties as soon as possible, hi connexion with the proposed remodelling of the school it was deckled to apply to the Education Boiird for particulars and.also to request the Board's advice in the matter. It was also decided to ask the Board to forward plans of the proposed remodc-ilihg to the committee ! for inspection.
