PERSONAL.
(special to "ram tmi*.") GREYMOUTH, March 26, The Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L-.C., and Mrs Michel left this morning en route for Adelaide. Mr and Mrs J. Steer left this mornins for Wellington. Mr A. C. Cnttrell left, on his return to Ohrist.ehurch this morning. Mr W. Cunliffe, senior clerk at, the railway goods shed, left this morning for Ashburton on transfer. Prior to his departure he was presented by his colleagues with a well-fiiled wallet. Mr J. Kyall made tho presentation. Mr and Mrs G. Warnes left to-day for Melbourne. Mr X. Griffon, of the Tlailway Department, Greymouth, will act as relieving stationmaster at Reef ion during Mr J. Dick's absence on holiday. Mr T. A. Stephens, slationmaster at Greymouth, who is being transferred to Christchuich, was honoured by the railway guards and station staff and presented with a case of Loc-wc pipes and tobacco pouch. The Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of Hokitika. will officiate at. the dedication cerrmotsy in connexioii with the new Roman Catholic Church at Ko.katahi, which will be opened on Sunday. The Very Rev. Father Campbell will be the cccasional preacher. Mr Jack Steel is to be accorded a welcome home social at Hokitika next week. Mr Frederick Chapman, of Wataroa, died this morning at the age of CO years. Death was due to pneumonia. Obituary. Mr John Hill Brown, a Dunollie miner, died last, evening at the Grej Hospital at the age of 36 years. lie leaves a widow. The death is announced of Mr Jeremiah O'Donnell. a pioneer miner of t.he Maori Creek district, where he formerly kept a store. The deceased was 77 years of age. He had spent the last few years at Wcst.port and Runanga. 1 Borough Improvements. The surface of Johnstcn street, which connects Gresson and Boundary streets, has been ploughed, and' the borough workmen are engaged in its conversion into 511 up-to-date thoroughfare. This street, which at present is little better than a wilderness, v/ill probably be utilised for a .great deal of traffic when formed and metalled. Association Football. There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Reefton Association Football Club. It w,as decided to affiliate with tho Westland Association and to make a joint application with the Ladies' Hockey Club for the use of the racecourse ground. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr A. MclCenzie; secretary-treasurer, Mr Lowden; committee, Messrs Lockington, Sharpe, Corbett, McCormick, and Newton. Ladies' Hockey. At the annual meeting of the Cobden Ladies' Hockey Club, Miss J. Frederick was appointed secretary-treasurer, Miss D. Dewar captain and delegate to the West Coast Association, and Miss M. Williams viee-captain. It was decided to onter a junior team. Dunedin Exhibition. Poor support has been given by the local bodies to the scheme for raising funds for ■ a West Coast court at the Dunedin Exhibition. In view of the lack of co-operation displayed, tho Inangakua County -Council has withdrawn it 3 vote of £SO for the project. Maruia Road. . At the monthly., meeting .of the Inangahua County Council, it was decided to inform the Public Works Department thn.t the grant of maintenance money for Maruia road on the basis -of £ for £ was not considered sufficient. League Football. Two additional teams are to be entered for the competitions under the West. Coast Rugby League. Waiuta j Club intends withdrawing from the j senior grade and entering instead a junior team. A meeting is to be held at the week-end for the purpose of forming a Mawlieraiti -Club. It is the intention •of those who arc active in this connexion to enter - a senior team. Hospital Boaxd. The monthly meeting of the Grey Hospital Board was held this afternoon. Advice was received i'rom the Blackball Medical Association that the terms for the new agreement had been ac-. ecpted.'Mr Ashton said that there was some feeling at the decision of the Board j not to have a ceremony in connexion with the laying of tho foundation stone of t.he building. j Mr Brislanc said it would be a grave reflection on the Board: if there was no ceremony. The of Health should be invited to visit the Coast on the occasion.
Finally it was dccideu, on the resolution cf Messrs Ashton and Brislane, to hold a ceremony on Easter Tuesday, and to arrange for Sir Maui Pomare to officiate if possible. Nurse Smith, of Christchurc.h, was appointed to the staff of the Rewa Hospital. Sister A. Johnston was np,pointcd to the vacancy on. the hospital staff, and Sifters M. Weeniuk and Blair were appointed night sister and temporary theatre sister respectively. The tender of Messrs Tarfitt and Company for groceries was accepted. Other tenders accepted were as fellows: —R. E. Bellamy and Co., burials; Kennedy Bros., coal; Deere Bros., carting; Schaef and Sons, mattresses; Warren, milk; Shannon and Glen, bread; Mawhera Meat Company, meat. The Health Department alvised that the salary for a male clerk undertaking the duties of secretary and house steward should be about £330 per annum. It was resolved to advertisi the position. Flood Damage. A heavy flood in the Hokitika river, due to yesterday's rain, cut into the bank near Kanieri township and endangered the sawmill company's tramway and the electric power company's line to Hokitika. Protection works which have been necessitated will cost £'2so. Motor Trade. Too much competition has been given as the reason for the decision of several _owners of taxis and motor-trucks engaged in the carrying business to give up business. Many local carriers have been in the habit of converting their motor-lorries into vehicles for conveying passengers to cricket' and football matches at week-ends, but the heavy taxation which is being imposed has rendered this side of their business scarcely a payable one. Magistrate's Court. At to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Hokitika, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presiding, Arthur G. Greaney was fined 20s and costs for falsely representing himself to bo 21 years of age, and 1 obtaining liquor thereby from the licenI see of Railway Hotel. Leslie . Gibbons, a youth under 18 [years pf age, was'fined 20s and costs
for entering a billiard room unattended by a parent. • James Manzoui. keeper of tbp room, was fined a. similar amount for allowing Gibbons to be present. A jrirl aged 14 years appeared at a sitting of the Juvenile Court charged ■with the theft of.articles from a houje on Kanifri road.' Phe was admonished and discharged. Kahapotahi Bridge. The Minister of Public Works has granted an application by the, Westland OoUDty Council for a subsidy of i for £ up to £2OO for protection -works on the north bank of the Kahapotahi bridge. Rugby Football. The attendance at the annual meting of the Excelsior (Hokitika) Rugby Football Club was large. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr G. A. Perry; president. Mr H. M. Coulson: secretary. Mr R. McDonald; captain, Mr I'. Hughes; coach, Mr J. Bannister; delegates to Rogbv Sub Union, Messrs J. J. Breeze and Ooulson: general committee. Messrs D, Heenan, Ait-ken, W. Ross, T. Preston, S. Thompson, Gugicli. . Thompson, P. Ross, and J. McFarlaue.
At the annual meeting of the Jnangaliua Junction Football Club the election of officers resulted in the return of the following;— President, Mr T. McGillicuddy; vice-presidents. Messrs J. AValla.ce, J. Jackson. A. Wells, C. Dally; committee. Messrs W. Kelly, \. Comfort, Wallace, McGiUicuddy and R. Arnold; secretary, Mr S. Dillon. A proposal that, the Club play this year under the Bullcr Rugby Union was discussed. Greymouth Borough Council. The Greymouth Borough Council met to-night. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt), and Crs. F. A. Kitchingham, J. W. Grecnslade, J. MeGinley, A. Armstrong, G. R. ITarker, IT. F. Doogan, R. J. Williams, T. B. Batly and J. O'BricD, M.P. A letter was received from the Riecarton Borough Council asking for support for its contention that, the Main Highways Board should contribute towards the maintenance of portions of main, highways passing through the borough. Cr. Kite h high am, in moving that tho Council support tho protest of the Riecarton Borough Council, said that tho Board should be empowered to contribute in cases such as the Riecarton road, which was au outstanding example of a portion of a highway passing through a. borough and carrying a great deal of traffic. Cr. Doogan seconded the resolution, which was carried.
The committee of the United Queen, and the secretary of the West Coast Rugby League both applied for the use •of the Recreation Ground on Easter Saturday: It was decided to discuss the matter, in committee.
The secretary of the West Coast Beekeepers' Association applied for the use of the Municipal Chambers for June 2nd, 3rd, 4th and sth for the annual conference of the National Beekeepers' Association.
Mr Greenslade said that the Council would be obliged to curtail the letting of th Chambers, as the furniture was getting knocked about. It was decided to grant the request. The Council discussed in committee the necessity for improvements to the borough drainage system. Cr. Doogan said that the Electric Power Boatd had called for tenders for material to be used in the reticulation of the district. An ordinary installation should cost from £ls to £lB. On the motion of Cr. Kitcliingham, the devising of means to persuade residents to use paint .instead, of tar on roofs and walls and thus improvo the town -was referred to the Finance Committee. Old Boys' Association. At the half-yearly meeting of the Greymouth. Old Boys' Association, Mr G. Perotti presented the Honours Board containing the names of all the vicepresidents. 'it was decided to hold tho annual ball in the Town Hall on Juno 2nd, and to conduct euchre tournaments throughout ; the winter. A resolution was carried protesting against the action of the vandals who had recently thrown the seats placed in the borough into the river.
