OBITUARY.
The death occurred at Kussell last week of Mr Edwin H. C. Sanders, father of the late Lieutenant-Commander William E. Sanders, V.C., D.5.0., 8.N.8. Mr Sanders, who was 72 years of age, was formerly a well-known resident of Takapuna, but latterly had been living in retirement at the Bay of Islands. His son rendered conspicuous service while in command of one of the mystery ships of the British Navy, and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was' kille'd on August 14th, 1917, as a result of the vessel on which he was serving being blown up. One of the father's most prized possessions, in addition to the "Victoria Cross, was a personal letter from the King, in which his Majesty stated it was a matter of sincere regret that the death of Lieutenant-Command-er Sanders had deprived him of the pride of personally conferring upon him the Victoria Cross, the greatest of all rewards for valour and devotion to duty. The Cross was later handed to the latrj Mr Sanders by Lord Jellicoe at an impressive ceremony in the Auckland Town Hall in June, 1918.
