For faithful, descriptive music, that is, presenting a- true picture of 'life, it would be hard to surpass "The Street cf tb? Ouled Nails" gramophone record by Gustav Hoist. The composer was himself in North Africa. It is doubtful if he could otherwise written with such accuracy of th» sounds of the East, of which in sentiment* if not in terms o! geography, North Africa forms part. The very street cries of itinerant merchants, the noises of the passage of heavy tra'dic in narrow ways, tho monotones of individual the weird founds that* pass for singing and that are so sweet in Oriental cars, are all recognisable in this inovement from tha ''Beni Nora Suite. Only the colour and movement and the indefinable cdours of the East are wanting to make this tone picture as complete to all other senses as it is to the car.
