ASHBURTON.

SOCIAL.

Miss K. Symonds, of Christchurch, is spending a few days with Mrs A. R. Thomas (Eiffelton).

General News,

Shortly after 4 a.m. on Saturday, the Ashburton Fire Brigade received a call to a wooden shed which was alight at the rear of the old Lion Brewery in Dobson street. On the arrival of the brigade it was found that the fames had a good hold of the shed, which containa motor-lorry and number of sundries. Before the outbreak was subdued nothing but charred remains was left. The lorry, which was owned by Mr T. Miller, cordial manufacturer, of Ashburton," was insured for £SOO. There appears to be a suspicion surrounding the origin of the fire, for it is stated that a horse-drawn waggon, left some distance from the scene of the fire on Friday night, was found the shed when the outbreak was discovered. Fortunately, it was removed before being damaged. Croquet. A break tournament was played on the Ashburton Croquet Club lawn on Saturday, for a handsome silver cakebasket, presented by Mr A. H. Morgan, of Shannon, North Island. There were 21 competitors. Mrs T. J. Hunter, of the A grade, and Mr Patterson, of the B grade tied, and in a play-off Mrs Hunter won by 28 to 18. Mr Patterson, on behalf of Mr Morgan, presented Mrs Hunter with the trophy, and warmly congratulated her upon her good performance. The recipient suitably responded. A hearty vote of thanks was aecorded the prizegiver, and the secretary was asked to forward to Mr Morgan the club's appreciation of his kindness.

Bowljng. There was an attendance of about 40 members of the Ashburton Bowling Club present on the club's grpen on Saturday, when several friendly games and a rink match were contested under ideal weather conditions.
