SPORTING.

Nominations for the M»rlborpugh Racing Club's Summer Meeting oloae to-morrow.

Acceptances for the Canterbury Jockev Club's Summer Meeting are tine ftt 8 p.m. on Wednesday, at which time also subscriptions aro due for the Middle Park Plate.

The Good Night gelding Prowler broke down while contesting the tost race at the Poverty Bay Turf Club s Meeting on Saturday. . Followers of J. T. Jamieson's team will not hare very pleasant recollections of the second day of the Taranaki Jockev Club's Autumn Meeting of USS. With the exception of Landslide (unplaced) the members of.the team were very heavily supported, and though I>al Eaton and Spoony returned small dividends for second, whatever' returns were made bv these two would be swallowed up by the non-success of Gold Acre in the Taranrki Stakes.

10. George turned out three winners at New Plymouth on Thursday. These were Stork, Oration, and Rafcv. . The acceptances for the Electric Hack Handicap at Rotorua to-day will necessitate another division.

The Wingatui trainer F. Shaw will he present at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting on with Olymnia, Rob. and Solway. Othe. trainers' frbm outside provinces will be vi*itin<r Riecarton on that day and the fixture" appears likely to eclipse tho very puocessful gaitfienn-g Jfckl last February.

Thursday's win on Pilliewinkie was F E Jones's third successful ride in the Dunedin Cup. He wored on Stepdancer in 1907 and on her daughter, Warstcp, in 1915. T Llovd has kept Sunart on bis Tegs" for a long time and praise in no little measure is due. to him for the*. successes achieved by the Sunny Lake adding in the past. During the runof the Egmont Cup Sunart save out'and a long spell will be necessary.

Uwatoetoe, the winner of the Ki«onrHaa<lic»if at the Poverty Bny Tiirf Cub's Meeting on Saturday, has been verv consistent during the wst few months. In her eight runs diirino- the current season she has been in the money seven times, made up ot three win's, three seconds, and one third. All her efforts have been m modest company, but the Polydamon fitly can be ticked off as a reasonable prospect farther afield than the bisborne district. She is from Lyrome, hv Birkenhead—Lyrebird, by ' bt. L*gcr—Lyre, by Patriarch—Lyra, by Thofmanby.' •

Some owners have much more faith in the prowess, of prominent horsemen than tho general, public, and m the Nurserv Handicap at New Plymouth Koval 'Mint carried no less than 201u overweight to secure the services or 11. Reed, Royal Mint, was filth favourite in the field of seven and was not in the first three at the finish.

J, Cray, son of the well-known horseman H. Gray, scored his first success in New Zealand by piloting Mountain Bell to victory in the Mokau Hack-.Handicap.at New Plymouth on Saturday. ...'.,.

The Auckland horseman P.. W- M?Tavish was not long, adding to his winning list after having his license restored. He won - on ; No Response and tfralla at theTftranaki J.O. Meet-ing,-on Saturday.

Apple Dig Won and Eaton Bells, two winners at "Wrogatui on Saturday, are' Austrnlian-bred. t Both are' useful and should take a hi«h place amongst southern horses in the near future. Avola, was decidedly, lwne in front when - doing: Ker preliminary on Thursday «.t New PlymiDuth. It seemed a big risk starting this gaodmnre on the hatd track;. She : d>id not remain tor the; second, day on Saturday. A northern. winter ' expresses his opinion that MurAahi lias trained- off. His form at both Hawera and New Plymouth was not his true form by any means. He seemed unable to stay, and staying-»was regarded as his.forte.

TreriHiaa and Cawnpore, who won at Rotoru*'On Saturday, are; Australianbred geldings, and each is likely to bring hia aire into prominence.with another yea&r on to his age. Cawnpow was-sent .to Sydney in the spring to be infamedl for the Australian Derby, but showed little form before coming back t» the dominion. He seems useful over asltortioouTse. - ■

Alaric may be aanongst the TfinncTs again shortly. Hd has been sprinting fairly well on the track at and '-will mote than pay his.way if. he takes kindly to the jumping business, which is to be during the coming winter;

'Deluge appaten't|y is riot a good : is expected, to be prominent in his engagements on hia. home course, Wangaaroi, next week. ' Attractive briiit up a good reputation bv his track work early this season, but ha» yet taireproduee this in public. After a bad passage in his race at. the recent meeting.aSb, Hawara, several keen fblidwers at the game marked him\bff as a probable winner in the near future. His owner-trainer, ;;■ the New Zealander J. M. Cameron, seems ; to understand the spn of Martian thoroughly, and though this brilliant gelding does not getVanything beyond a

'Notes on" the-Racing. The weather was perfect for the concluding day of'the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting.' The course wajs hard and a mim"bei of-horses went-very short on it. The Owhiro; Hurdles was a chapter of accidents, the' hlfd ground no doubt beingresponsible for them. Red Admiral turned a somorsault at the stand hurdle and all thought he had broken his back, but after a minute or so he scrambled to bis feet,, but was very shaky. Londonderry fell at the next fence, and then Soldiers' Pride overjumped and toppled over at tho hurd:e bv the seven furlongs post, when he was bowling along well in front. Finally Camel Amble crashed through the second last fence ■when he looked to have a royal chance 01 ■winning. After thai Frenchman centered home. None of th» riders was hurt. All the acceptors went to the post for the Hopeful Handicap, and they were a. rather nice-looking lot, not a high-class colkctioji, but horses that are likely to be usehil'Vith age. Circulation ran a great race under her Set lOlh; always out fighting for the leacLgn the outside «{ two, she was only just beaten by inches for second mon*y. QtiicHorm, who ran second, went rather short in'her preliminary. John Bradbury, a good sort of a gelding by Paper Money—Ena, who was makinjc his bow to. the public, ran a good race. He was very green, and it'looked as if he would have run aeoond with a- wore experienced horseman on top. Nothiug showed less experience than the winn;r,- Centrepiece, by The' a full-grown brown colt: He was star gaailig once he hit the lead, ana Jonea had to keep hard at him to get to the winning post first. Gay Flower refused to line np to the barrier and was left, while Margaret Birney was very shy of the barrier, and dwelt when the tapis weve released. Overhaul was never dangerous. . The publio went t for Jubilance m the Warrington Handicap. Though always N well placed, the favourite never looked likely to win. In fact, the race was always :v rualch between Apache, who von, and Karmaid, who finished second. Apache v.-or. hijvdily, but he certainly crowded Barm.iid c-ver the last hundred vards. This, however, did not affect the result. Fresco ran* a fair :aoe, , but Hungry Hill went like a duffer. Obhgw who went n good race into fifth place, fill into a ditch on the day between the rates i and this could not have done her 'any s;ood. ! Dancing Days, Gerani»l, Winkle's test, and Monoxide went rather short \n their canters before the Flying Handicap. The start .was good, but Monoxide was too eore to go with the others. Geranial, after getting away well, was too sore to show her beet, and she was never a danger. Lston Eolle. ran £ better Tace than on the first day, and galloping boldly, she oad er.asrh left to stall eff Winkie's. Best.over the list fusions after the Winkie ge.tling 10.-.ked to •have her measure. Winkie's Best did not run a good race, and there is -no doubt biit that he felt'the ground • vny hni". Had the sting ,been out of *he ground the re- , suit woulcl probably have \>een niffercnt. Listening Post, Ravenna, and t'.tar Rtnger 1 Went down short in their ]>.elim:uanes for itbeDunedin Jockey Club HanJicip, with Deucalion and Mountain L;"oa rar.'r.g down like tigeTs. Dencalion was bst icr a leng way, but turning for home he ran round and never looker! likelv to get beaten. Liatoning Post, who was an almost even money, chance with were 10 tickets between themi-in the .'order- cf favouritism, went down verv short in his cantor, aud lie never threatened danger. Mountain J-ion, as .'"usual, set out to wjn all the-way, and was beaten, although he struggled a_loug with the greatest gameness, and lud Deucalion- doing his best in the inst furlong. Ravenna, who stripped well, did n-t inn his nsual generous race, and probably she likea the sting out of the ground. Star Sanger was outclassed. Why Clontarf was made favourite for the Waihola Handicap, is a mystery. On the previous day's running Apple Diguion should have been favourite, but he was allowed to go out a poor • third choice '.om Clr.ntarf and Sweet Melody. There is veiy. little to ea'v about the race. Apple Dighton. who wa's always well placed, was a winuer at any stage, but h* was lucky, aa Rapier, who finished at a great pace, might have beaten him had he got elear early m the rsce. There wero onlv three runners in the Hazlett Memorial. Red Wink stripped a very fit horse while Loughtea looked big and backward,, but on the strength cf a great gallop over seven furlongs he w«s sent out favourite. The surprise of the race was Sun Up. He looked light but seasoned, and as aoon as the barrier was.released he went for the money. Turning for home Sun Up was in charge, doing his best with Loughrea and Red Wink being ridden along to get him. Rarely has a better finish been seen on any course. Sun Up struggled to hold his advantage, while Loughrea and Red Wink were hard at it, and the result was that the three went past the post - together,. the judge's verdict bein? Red Wink first. Loushviea. second, Sun Up third. Red Wink deserved to win, as he had to cover much more ground than his two opponents. At "the same time it must be noted that there is I not a harKtieanper in New Zealand who has J asked Red Wink to give Loughrea 101b. I Thel;meeting was brought to a conclusion ! with the- Welter Handicap, for which Sart- ! ist waa sent out a good favomrite. -There is httle to say abont the race. All British set.out io wia all the ,wav, and he did. A I furlong from home Sartist looked to have his
