ARCHBISHOP JULIUS.
TO- THE BDITOB ' OF "THI • JBISS." ' Sir,—-To many. of. your readers, the following extract from "The Press"-ot May 13th, 1890, from the first addresa in Christchurch of Archbishop • Julius, may be; of ; . interest.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. February : I4tlv 1925. ' Extract from r Archbishop Julius !s First Address in Cnristchtixeh.
"Press," May' 13th, 1890. I''-have been'asked, I was once asked by a lady in Australia, to which party of the Church I belonged, and I can, say, as I said then— ""l have been trying to find out for' five-aod-twcnty years, and I really don't (Apr plause.) Let rhe take yon into my confidence. I was brought up a strict evangelical, and I.thank God for it. I thank God for those deep principles of personal religion whioh" were ingrained into my soul. (Applause.) I thank God that. I have been led to something, more than I knew at the first. I am an evangelical to-day, but then I have learned something more of the principles, arid what I am to-day I scarce know. Perhaps I am what "Punch" describes, as an evangelical Broad Churchman with High Church views, or perhaps I am a Broad High Churchman with, loving sympathy for everybody who.differs from me. You may suppose that I don't want everybody to agree, with me; but• I shall go to work with them, and give them my fullest sympathy for no doubt they are doing a. work which I:myself am not able.to do.
