TIMBER FOR NEW SCHOOLS.
UTILISING PRISON LABOUR,

A scheme by which prison labour in the State sawmill at Erua will be utilised to produce timber at cost prico for the construction of new schools was explained by the Minister of Education. The mill is run by the Prisons' Department and is cutting rimu, inatai, and totara. Tho bulk of. the output is being taken by the Railways and Public Works Department. The'mill is equipped with a modern. plant and about forty prisoners are employed under a competent foreman.
Sir James Parr stated that the Minister in charge of prisons was desirous of helping him to reduce the cost of school construction and additional machinery was being installed. It was hoped to produce the necessary timber for the schools at cost price. , Auckland and other North Island-Education Boards were having the scheme submitted to them.
