OTIRA TUNNEL TRAFFIC.
WEST COAST FIGURES. The following figures show tho tonnage (mostly of timber and coal) brought through the Otira tunnel from tho West Coast during tho sis months ended January 31st:— Tons. August w »» 28,000 September .. j.. 28,800 October i... "8,000 November .. 25,723 December .. 22,906 January .. 20,050 The decrease shown in the January figure was due to tho fact that the mills had hot properly got going again after the Christmas holidays. Tho biggest day of January was the 23rd, when 1367 tons were brought through, it was not a particularly heavy day, for it is oh record that 2000 tons have been carriod through in twenty-four hours.
