UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE.
AN AUCKLAND INCIDENT. Speaking to the Canterbury Education Board members yesterday on; the question of unauthorised.. expenditure, Sir James Parr, Minister, of Education, stated that the Canterbury Board was not peculiar in that' 1 tie Auditor-Gen-eral had been on its track. He related • the following incident which occurred when he was Mayor of Auckland. .The Mayor and Councillors of Auckland reoeived notice that the GovernorGeneral was to make Auckland his land-ing-place, and they felt that they could not allow him to land in the old capital without entertaining him properly. Accordingly they decided to give him a lunch. "We did it. well," said Sir James, "and invited leading citizens. I might say that the lunch and speeches were satisfactory—eminently satisfactory. Unfortunately—and I say it with sadness —we had not reckoned with the Auditor-General, and afterwards discovered that, the whole of . the expenditure was "illegal. Consequently the Mayor and Council'were all invited to pay for the. function—at £l7 los each! I simply had to. send along a cheque," concluded Sir James with a smile.
