WAIKUKU BEACH CARNIVAL

The "Waikuku Beach Carnival, postponed from Boxing- Day, was held or 'lhursday. The weather waa beautifully fine, and, in spite of counter-attractions, there were 3000 ■people present. The carnival was arranged to wise funds for beach iniprjvement3. Sine? the great flood, eighteen months ago, largo sums of money have been ia:sed and spent in making the beach safe from flood waters. A new sporls ground hat been put down and a new hall built. An excellent programme had b->en drawn up and there was fun in plenty for all. The Rangiora, Bras 3 Band was in attendance and played selections ditrig the day. The secretarial duties were well carried cut by Mr T. H. Fra3er. Durig the afternoon a baby show wa3 held, Mr W. A. Bowse (Mayor of Rangiora) being the judge. Results:—Babies under six month*: Mrs Gilmer ), Mrs Lester '2. Under twelve months: Mr 3 Thompson 1, Mrs Purau 2. The results of the dancing events, which were judged by Mr W. Fraser, were: Highland Fling, under 12—Miss K. Cole 1, K. McGrath 2, D. Brady 3. 'Highland Fling, under 16—Kitty Cole 1, R. Fitzgibbon 2, E. McGrath 3. Seanrt Truibhais, under 12—D. Brady. 1, F Cole 2, F. Fitzgibbon 3. Under 1G: M. Brady 1, K. Cole 2, R. Fnzgibbon 3. Sword Dance—Under 12: E. McGrath. Under 16: M. Brady 1, L. Tomlinson 2, K. Cole 3. Irish Ji<i—Under 12: E. McGrath 1, F. Cole 2, D. Brady 3. Under 16: E. McGrath 1, K. Cole 2, M. Brady 3. Hornpipe-Undcr 12: W. D. Brady 1, B. McGrath 2. Under 16: R. R. Fitzgibbon 1, M. Brady 2. Highland Fling, open—K. Cole 1, R. Fitzgibbon 2, E. McGrath 3Guessing- Competition, Boll—Mis3 Goldsmith (Margaret). As a wind-up to the carnival, a. danca was held in the Beach Hall, the music being supplied by Miss Elier. The financial results of the carnival are expected to be very satisfactory.
