SUMMER SCHOOL.
The G'hristchurch branch of the Worker's l!kiucauonal Association this year opened its annual Summer School at springiield on Friday. The Domain, some lO acres of flat ringed by a shelter belt of tail pines, froms a convenient and attractive site for the camp. While some of the students are accommodated in the schoolroom and school-house, the bulk arc enjoying a more out of door life in the line of tents fringing the pine trees. In spite of the steady misty drizzle, varied with heavy showers persisting all day, some 60 members assembled in the lecture tent at 2.30 p.m., where they were welcomed by Mr Shnibshall, vicepresident of the District Council of the Association. Professor Shelley, Director of the School, gave a short address on the objects and ideals, and conduct of the session, and outlined the peneral course of work, emphasising its elastic naturo and asking for suggestions as to additional classes. After teA in a capacious dining tent, an adjour.-jnKjnt was made to the schoolroom v.her-} "Piofessor Shelley read a play. Miss Jennings organised an enjoyable, sing-scng and concert to the accompaniment of heavy showers. The general programme as at present arranged includes a lecture at 8.30 a.m. on some aspects of international finance arranged by Professor Condliffe .via Mr locker'; at 10 a.m. a general lecture by Professor Shelley on nationalism v. cosmopolitanism; 11.15 dealing with any problems brought forward by the students. Afternoon, rambles and sports; 6.30 p.m., The Drama, Professor Shelley. Saturday morning broke misty and moist, but intervals of sunshine came later. The day's lectures began with the geographical factors of Internationalism by Mr Tocker at 8.30 a.m. Professor Shelley followed at 10 dealing with the ethical aspects of internationalism. McDougall's recent work on National v. Universal Ethics was reviewed, quoted and criticised to an audience comprising nearly the whole school.
