SHIPPING NOTES. - There is very little movement in coastal shipping at present, many of the smaller vessels having been paid off until, after the holidays. Two overseas vessels are in port and arc providing work for a fair number of '.vatersidera. Otherwise the port would be practically idle. The Wootton completes loading here todav for Wellington. " The Holmdale is due to-morrow . from TimaTU, and loads for Wellington and Wanganui. The crews of the steamers Ngakuta, Ngatoro, and Kaitangata have-been paid off at Wellington, and the vessels are laid up for survey. The Malieno left Sydney on Wednesday for Wellington direct, and arrived there early yesterday afternoon. The Union "Co.'e steamer Moeraki arrived at Wellington on Saturday from Melbourne direct, with .passengers, mails, and : cargo. The vessel is to leave there to-day on the re turn trip to Melbourne, via Lyttelton, Dunedin; and Bluff. The Arawa, which sailed from Wellington on November 12th for Southampton, .is reported to have arrived "at-.'ier- destination on Wednesday morning last. | Cable advice has been received of the arrival at Glasgow on December 19th, of the Kaikoura from Wellington. The vessel sailed from Wellington on November 6th. The Waiwera left Brisbane ion ; _ Thursday morning for Lyttelton, where she''is- due tomorrow to commence loading for London,-via .New York and Boston. _ She will load also at Wellington, Nraier '(possibly Gisborne) Opu», and Auckland. Tho Shaw-Savill Company has been advised that tho Zealandio . 'eft Brisbane on Thursday morning for . Wanganui, where she is due to-morrow to load for Home. She loads also at Lyttelton, Bluff, Port Chalmers, Wellington, and Auckland.
GISBORNE WATERFRONT. NO RESPONSE TO CALL FOR LABOUR. (PRSSS ASSOCIATION TBUGBAJt.) GISBORNE, December 27. Three calls for labour for loading the* meat steamer Cumberland were made this morning, without response. It ia understood that the refusal of tho watersidera to accept engagement is intended as a protest against the term* of the new award, whioh provided for hourly payment instead of contracts.
