Fairly reliable statistics seem to show that nowadays there are fewer men smokers in this country compared with before the war (writes a London correspondent). So far as the tobacco trade is concerned, this is of small account, the loss being more than compensated by the greatly-increased number of women who smoke. The decrease in men smokers is attributed to war casualties, which included practically a million dead, but even more to the Army habit . which caused so manv men to substitute the cigarette for a pipe. It much more frequently happens that a cigarette smoker gives up tobacco than that a pipe smoker does so. And, as most cigarette smokers inhale, abstention is much more often necessary for health reasons. Experts reject the amusing theory that men are now giving up smoking because it is "too effeminate."
