TO SAVE THE TREES.
! AMERICA'S WAY. ! A committee of three experts on the California redwood arc to lie appointed l>y the S,i\o the Redwoods League to conduct .special research n-ork in redwood reafforestation and conservation, ]>r. "'."'list as it seems desirnMe that we should liave the great :odwooJ forest* to furnish in a ftttn-e lumber supply. . Mormon. - it aU> seems lUwraldv tliat the League devote attention to the furtherance of investigations by an expert eonimittee vvlii, h will promote the progress of plnns ef reafforestation. M 11,. added- ■•Researches in the field would ordinarily be conducted ov the Federal fores; service, by nnivei*! *ies. by iiidepeinleat forest' engineer-. and by ilit.. corporations. There are, however. large fields which hav* net been io\ ered by these agencies, and ea nnot be covered by the in at present. I think the l.eajjne ran perform a great service by giving its assistance in the furtherance of mi, h work until thoi ouplily nueiptnte means for such investigations- are developed by other njjen eio*. I have recommended that the Save the Kchvoods League express it* approval of the support- of inch rr. searches as may lie necessary in the immediate future for furtherance of the work of reforestation in tho redwood areas, and that the League i\\propria! a a sum for (he support of such work during the coming yeai. America some day \rill appreciate more fully the monumental work which the Save the Redwoods League has aeeon. plished in California, not onlr in preserving many heautiful stauds of these j giant trees, but also in securing earnJest co-operation of the lumber interest* j now eotnmitted to an extensive rcj forcstntion programme." T»r. Memnm speaks with the utmost optimism concerning the future work of preserving the redwoods in California. The fifth plank in tho platform of the League has been changed front "urging'' reforestation, as if. stood originally, to "supporting" reforestation, ho says. The Leagw'a work, therefore, eentres on plans /or x national redwood monument or park to be obtained by Congressional action and special research work of assisting rather than "propagandising'' to popularise the redwoods and their worth in the eyes of Slate and nation.
