Execration of tbe weather must have "bulked very largely in Timaru conversations yesterday, "for Boxing Day was ono of the most unpleasant days Timaru has vet experienced for a considerable time. A dull Christmas Day was followed by heavy rain showers in tho evening, and yesterday morning found the sky still very threatening. About 10 o'clock the rain again commenced, and driven by a strong south-easterly wind off the 60a it continued at intervals throughout the day. The total rainfall up to 4 p.m. yesterday was 86 points. There was then no sign of an improvement-. General Newt. During the past few days larg? num. bers of visitors have arrived in Timam, and all available accommodation in hotels and boarding-houses, is taxed. ■ Tho south-easterly wind, which blew all day yesterday, raised a considerable sea on the coast, and heavy rollers were breaking over .the eastern breakwater and Dashing Rocks. There was a good surf on Carolino Bay, but the accompanying weather conditions quite discouraged bathing. Amongst the many hundreds of. visitors at present in Timaru are approximately- one hundred visiting bowlers, who are taking part in the Christmas tournament. Caroline Bay Carnival, The Caroline Bay Association was ,unfortunate in the weather conditions for tho opening of its Christmas and New lear carnival, but it went ahead undauntedly with ;i 3 much of its programme as was "possible, in'spite of the rain and wind. A largo- number of people were at. the Bav Hall in the afternoon, where a.very jolly dance was in progress, and one or two side-shows in more sheltered spots did good business. The merry-go-round; and flying boats were also in action, and provided a great deal of enjoyment., for the youngsters.. Last night the dance was repeated, and attracted a large number of holiday-makers, who found it quite easy to bo happy though weatherbound.
