The discovery of a spot in the Pacific Ocean, south-west of JaDan. 32,636 ft, deep, will not greatlv astonish oceanographers, for the Pacific has long been known as the deepest of all the great seas of the globe. Nowhere else has any depth been reached as great as 30.000 ft. out in the Pacific as manv as iO soundings have been made exceeding that figure. In the Atlantic onlv two plaoes 'are bnovm with depths greater than 24.000 ft, the deepest being a spot north of the West Indies", where the lead found bottom at •27.972 ft.
