SMYRNA FIRE CLAIMS.
INSURANCE COMPANIES WIN. (ST CIBUS—PMSS ASSOCIATION —COPTEIGKT) (BEUTEB'S TELSOftAMfI.) LONDON, December 19. After a hearing which lasted twelve days, Mr Justice Rowlett, in the Commercial Court, gave judgment f° r defendant insurance companies in the Smyrna fire case. He held that the fire was an act of war, and was thus excluded from the insurance policies. The decision will be a big blow to many British traders, who were ruined by the fire. The action is treated as a» tsefc case for claims amounting to nearly £20,000,000 under insurance policies with British and other companies. [The fire at Smyrna occurred in September, 1922, when the Turks drove the Greeks out of Asia Minor. The town was practically wiped out. The plaintiffs in the test case were the American Tobacco Company.] I
