LYTTELTON NEWS.

Presentation to Mr S. G. Bailey. Mr S. G. Dalley, assistant Town Clerk, Lyttelton Borough Council, who has been appointed Town Clerk to the' New Brighton Borough Council, in succession to Mr A. Hectare, was yesterday presented by Mr 1. Hobbs, Town Clerk, on behalf of • the staK of the Lyttelton Borough Council, with an electro-plated coffee and tea service. In making the presentation, Mr Hobbs referred' to Mr Dalley's thirteen years service with the Council, and expressed- the opinion that he would carry out his new duties with success. On behalf of the citizens of the Port, he congratulated him on his new appointment. . ~ Mr H. H. Barnard, borough engineer, Baid he thought Mr Dalley's motto must be "civility," for he had always been courteous and considerate to the public. Mr W. McAuliffe, borough gas manager, also spoke in appreciation .of Mr Dalley. Among those now holding responsible _ positions with other public bodies and previously in the service of the Lyttelton Borough Council are Mr Geo. Lewin, Town Clerk, Dunedin; Mr L. A. Stringer, Registrar of Canterbury College; and Mr J. Eames, Town Clerk, Lower Hutt. Foresters' liodge. At the fortnightly meeting of Court Queen of the Isles, the 0.R., Bro. S. Lane, presided over a large attendance. Correspondence was received from Mr W. J. Nicol, inviting the Court to attend a church parade to be held on the first Sunday in December. The invitation was accepted, members to muster ot 10.30 a.m. The Court also received an invitation from Mr H. Smith, secretary, B S.A:, to attend .a church parade at St. Peter's Hall on November 30th, at 1.45 p.m. One candidate was initiated by C.R. Bro. Lane, assisted by P.D.C.B. Bro Roberton, and was welcomed into the Order with the Foresters' Fire. P.D.O.R. Bro. Roberton reported at length on the District: Conference, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

Sanders' Cap Trials. To-morrow-the first of the trials to select a boat to represent the Port in the matches for the Sanders' Cup at Auckland will be sailed, arid the race is certain to attract much interest. The competing craft will be the Secret, the Pioioi, and the Linnet.

Jumble Sale. A jumble sale and sale of work was hell yesterday afternoon in the Bt. Joseph's 1 Hall in aid of the fund for the renovation of the Roman Catholic Presbytery. There was a good attendance, and satisfactory business was reported last evening;- . The stallholders were: Oake and sweets stall, Mrs T. Daulton and Miss M. Lufaro; jumble, Mrs Bald and" Misses Gellety, M. Cogan, and McDonald; work, Miss Gelleghan and helpers •, produce, Mesdames 0' Regan, Sheenan, and Dillon. Outbreak of Tin. At 11.35 p.m. yesterday, the Fire Brigade attended at the residence of Mr J. Blackler in Canterbury street,.. where an outbreak of fire hod occurred in a "bach" detached from the main building. Mr Blackler had been reading in bed, and dropped off to, leaving; the candle burning,, and it ib .presumed that this was the cause of the outbreak. The fumes caused him to wake up and beat a retreat. The brigade-and volun-; teer helpers soon had the flames extinguished, though the interior of the building was extensively damaged. • ■
