MEETING OF ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of " the Canterbury . School Committees' Association was held in the Trades Hall last evening, Mr H. Chapman presiding over a. good attendance. The Minister of Education wrote regardthe provision of caretakers' coitoges at tho schools. Ho had pointed out to. a deputation from the Association m 1923 tbat this provision was not made to any extent in other districts, and it would be impossible for him to find the necessary money. It was a question of Education Boards to deal with by granting smaller allowances to schools with cottages than to schools without them. This year a special sum of £3OOO had been placed on thp Estimates for payment to Education Boards to enable them to make special grants to committees whose expenses were higher than usual A deputation, consisting of the chairman, Messrs T H- Butterfield, V. A. Harvey, ?nd tho chairman of the various committees was formed to wait upon the Minister oi Education during his next -visit to Canterbury, for thi purpose of obtaining a guarantee that subsidies will not be reduced. It was decided to thank Messra T. K. Sidey and K. ilcKeen. M.P. s. for the stand they had" taken on behalf of the school committees when the House was considering the Education Act Amendment Bill. Tha chairman read a telegram regardin„ the education officials' annual conference, as published in yesterday's issue. He quoted especially n paragraph stating thai the conference had discussed the basis oi repreeentation on Education Boards and tbat it was decided to ask the Government to bnng in legislation providing for a more oven distribution of legislation. 1 don't know what to make of it," said-the chairman.
