BUSES OUST TRAMS. NO FURTHER EXTENSIONS IN AUCKLAND. (special to "thr press.") AUCKLAND, November 27. The decision of tho City Council no* to undertake further extensions pf tramway tracks in view of competition by privately-owned buses has resulted in the dismissal of eighty members of tho permanent way construction staff. The workmen were given seven days 1 notice, which terminated to-day. There is a possibility of still further retrenchment. The Auckland Tramways Union has issued an appeal to tho public, emphasising the loss this has caused to the community as a whole, as well as to the employees and their families. This wastoful competition, it is stated, is already causing a loss of approximately £350 weekly by these first dismissals. Other objections against buses aro that the conditions of labour in regard to them are by no means ideal, and that they pay utterly inadequate license fees for the use of the excellent connnunitymade roads. The appeal urges citizens not to drive their fellows into "Unemployment. It concludes with an opinion that all transport being a public utility should be publicly owned.
