CHRIST'S COLLEGE.

THE MEMORIAL HALL. By the time the students of Christ's College resume after their Christmas ami New Year vacation, the new Memorial Hall, -which is being provided by the College Old Boys, will be ready for use. The new hall, -which is -unique among school edifices in the Dominion, will add yet another handsome structure to the fine pile which comprises the College buildings. It will cost somewhere in the vicinity of £26,000, and judging from its appearance at the present time will be well worth the sum expended on its construction. Although the building will be ready for occupation within the next few months, it will be by no means complete, because there will* remain an amount of carving work, etc.. to be done from time to time, which will occupy a few years. The hall itself has been built of Hoon Hay stone relieved with Bedcliffs stone. 'Accommodation will be provided for about 1000 people, and the interior will be panelled with' Queensland maple, speeial panels being inscribed with the proud war record of the school—a record which will comprise from SOO to 900 names. The roof spans are of Oregon, substantial beams -and supports beautifully fitted and finished. Two oriel windows provide a somewhat unusual feature, but this is accounted for by the position of the hall, which really has two distinct fronts. The main aspect faces the quadrangle, and the other will be on Rolleston avenue. The hall has beSn built right up to the 3trcet line, and ths oriel windows arc amongst the principal of the many beautiful features of the hall. That facing the quadrangle has been carried unusuallv low, and will admit an uninterrupted view of the football ground. Above the panelling is the interior Oamaru stone, the whole presenting-a contrast which at once provides distinction and an ad.ded beauty to the building. The supports of the root beams are carried down to tlie stone buttresses, while the carrying or the hammer ends of the huge beams lends vet a further touch of beauty to a splendid interior decoration sl ; h< ;' u ' e ; Opening from the main hall is.the masters' dining-room, a feature of which will be the Barker fireplace—a memorial to the late Dr. Barker, wh.c-h was previously situated in the old Svnod Hall." Adjoining is the staft dining-room, the stewards' offices and dry stores, and upstairs the stewards' is Mr C. Wood, and the contractors P. Graham and bons.
