Tho Cropley Commission resumed its examination of Alderman Walker with reference to his account books, Mr Watt, counsellor Walker, thereupon warned <the Commissioner that hs "(vould advise his client to take a certain action and line. Tho enquiry would be proceeded with at tho Commissioner's own risk. He also issued a similar warning to the Press regarding tho publication of ovidence. Sir Watt said somo of tho questions being asleed regarding character could be a#kcd. ia a Court of law, which tho Commiiaioa was not. They were being asked under the sanction of an Act which placed Walker under compulsion. The Commissioner continued his *s> : amination of Walker with reference * to the purchase of certain soldiers* gratuity bonds, regarding which hj« and soldiers had made statutory declarations of value. He subsequently was allowed to make further payment* , bringing the payments up to the fee® value of tho bonds. Walter said! he bought the bonds out of tindneas, because tho soldiers pestered hi® l, ' lo3t heavilv over tho transactions. . 1 Counsel for Alderman Shannon ad--1 dressed tho Commission on his behalf, ' claiming it roust exonerate Shannon ' from any connexion with corruption or graft. . . ■
