Coates (.Minister of Railways and of Public. Works) said there had been some criticism of the Nelson-Glenhope section of railway line. This, he admitted, would not pav at, present. but it would when linked'up with s , 4 : om - °J that ho was Ihe AVcstpoitInangahua line was. in his opinion, one of the most important- in the Dominion, because it was necessary to link up the eoit 1 system. He did not favour pushing on with the main South Island trunk system at present-. The day might- come when it- would have to be yone on with, but t-liat dav was not yet. There were other more attractive propositions requiring attention. There was no national call -for the South Islr.nd Main Trunk line, as it opened up no country and did not mean any development. Such Crown land as was involved was mostly covered with snow a.nd could ror the most part be put in one's pocket. 311' G. W. Forbes: You would want- a pretty big pocket.
