BRITAIN IN EGYPT.
AUSTRALIA ASKS TO BE CONSULTED. (bt cable—press association—coptrigst) (acstbaliax and x.z. cable association.) (Received October 36th, 9.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, October 10. The "Montreal Star" says: "The intervention of Mr Bruce in the Egyptian question is a novel Step in Empire procedure, which is deeply interesting to Canadians. Mr Bruce did not wait to be invited to intervene, but cabled Mr Mac Donald that Australia wanted to be consulted before a settlement was reached with Egypt. This is much more significant than if Britain had asked Australia to express an opinion. Australia spoke first and asserted her right to be consulted when hpr interests are affected. Any weakening of the British policy in Egypt, which might conceivably lessen her power to defend Suez, is a matter of supreme moment to Australia; but Australia has a real right to intervene. She is contributing to the defenco of the Empire. Canada is in an illogical position, claiming the right to be heard regarding measures for the defence of the Empire when she declines to share the burden of defence."
