Representatives immediately went into Committee ot "Ways and Means tconsider two resolutions dealing with the reduction of the duty on tobacco. The Minister of Customs (Hon. W. Downio Stewart) said the Government proposal keeping the promise made by the Minister of Finance some time ago that there would n reduction in the taxation oh pipe rr-baero. At: present th? duty on Vt:t tobacco was 4s 10d per lb, on plui; tobacco 4s >d. The proposal was to reduce these duties by Sd per lb. This* concession would absorb the Bum or £7.",400. and would come into force on January 17th next, which would give- the dealers time to clear their stocks. The Minister also moved thnt the duty on the following kinds of tobacco manufactured in New Zealand, a3 set forth in paragraphs A and D ot' Subsection T. of Section 22 of the Finance Act. 3!>2l (No- I> C abolished as from .Tanuarv 10th. 1025, and that duty as follows be payable on such tobacco if entered for home consumption after that date: (a 1 ) On tobacco cut Sd per lb; (d x ) on othitr tobacco Is 6d per lb ' The resolutions were agreed to on the voices. The Minister, in answer to Mr T. K. Sidev. said there would be a Tariff Bill to "ivc effect to these resolutions later oiu but he did not propose to bring it. down just yet, as there might be other items to be included.
