A deputation from the Middleton ratepayers waited on the Covincil in regard to the heavy rates levied. Messrs Love 1 ! Smith. C. Gardner, and Marsh addressed the Council. It was pointed out in reply that while no reduction could be made at- present, a reduction on the capital value would be made as tho areas concerned improved. Crs. Curry and Cross appointed to wait on the Bryndwr Burgesses' Association regarding rates. A complaint regarding the non-channelling of Queen street and Creswelt avenue was referred to the foreman. Mr T. wrote requesting that the work of rounding Strowan road corner, for which he had supplied the land, be completed. It was decided to carry out the work The Fire Underwriters' Association wrote stating that, premiums could not -bo reduced in tho fire area.. The Tramways Board wrote suggesting a notice prohibiting traffic inside the iram tracks on race days, and enclosing a plan of the proposed new track. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that there was no statutory power to vest the Council with the powers ot a borough in regard to the closing of roads. It was decided to recognise .Travis road as a public road. The Kaiapoi B<jrough Council wrote inviting the Council to be present' at a. meeting of local bodies regarding road construction at Rangiora. on October 21st. Crs. Hawke and Xicholla wero appointed as delegates. A letter from the Public Works Department advised that a e-übsidy would be available as soon as the estimates were ipassed by Parliament as follows:—North road £2250, Riccarton road £1750. MALVERN. The Malvern County Council met hist week, when all members were present with the exception of Cr. H. A. If night, who flent an apology for absence. Cr. Reid, who had been acting-chairman since Cr. Knight's departure, was in the chair. Crs. Murchison and Wright gave a full report on the recent hospital conference, to which they had been appointed delegates, and a vote of thanks was passed to them for their services and report. In accordance with notice given at last meeting, Cr. Murchison moved that a rate of l-7d be struck on Jande clasificd in Class B by the Waimakariri River Trust. The clerk reported that this was a very small matter a3 far as the office was concerned, the whole rate amounting to only twenty pounds. The Malvern Electric Power Board sent a echedulo of rates for house and street lighting. A committee, consisting of the chairman, and Crs. Reid, Wright, Murchison, and Hawke, was set up to go into the matter, as street lighting would benefit only a few of the ratepayers, and special rating areas might be uecessary if residents in townships wished the Council to apply for current which would be for their benefit only. Cr. Judd informed the Council that the Power Board was now, making steady progress, and hoped to be able to hive part of the district reticulated before. nest winter. Crs. Adams and Hawke reported on a visit they had been deputed to make to inspect a reserve on the Pig Saddle road. The reserve will be planted at a suitable season with pinus insignis and macrocarpa. A circular dealing with weather forecasting was before the Council, and members declared themselves in favour of tho movement if reliable forecasts were likely to result. A contractor on the Peninsula sent particulars of a motor plant he was using for speedy road repairs. The Council was keenly interested, as this plant, in conjunction with a crusher, would make the horse and cart method a back number. The Water-race Committee inspected the crossing between Messrs Pole's and G. Thompson's, the bridge over which is now in an awkward position owiYg to the railway road having been moved further west, and it was decided to remove the present bridge and pipe the full width of the road. With the exception of one or two races most of the Council's cleaning is finished, and the gangs will shortly be put on to the private races which are in need of attention.
