CAPTAIN O'GRADY APPOINTED. (BT CABLX—PBKSS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT) (Elinig'S TKLEGKAHS.) LOXDON, October 10. Captain James o'Grady, M.P., has been appointed Governor of Tasmania. LONDON. October 10. The "Daily Express'' says that Captain O'Grady's appointment is only ]x»sible because he will not be icquir.xl to occupy Government House, -which only a -wealthy man could afford to do. [Captain O'Grady has represented a Leeds constituency in the Labour interests since 1906. He is 5S years old and a native of Bristol. He sat as a member of the Bristol Town Council from 1597 to 1899, and was president of the Trades Congress in IS9S. From 1915 to 191S he was with British. French. Eussian and American troops in various theatres of war. I n 1917 he was sent on a special British Mission to Russia; and in 1919 he met a representative of the Soviet Government at Copenhagen to negotiate for the exchange of.British prisoners of war, and the repatriation of all British civilians at that time in Soviet Russia. In 1918 he had been allocated for special recruiting work in Ireland. Captain O'Gradv is secretary of the National Federation of General Workers. The vice-regal office in Tasmania has been vacant for a considerable time, owing to the comparatively small salary 4 which the State can afford to pay.]
