OPENING DAY. 'The opening flay of the Chrischurch Sailing and Power Boat Club on Saturday was very quiet in comparison with those oC previous year?, mainly on account of tho heavy weather in tbo city. One of tho most important things in New.Zealand was the training of the boys to be at home on Ihe water. The day might com© when their help would bo needed. The borough of Sumner appreciated what was being done by that and kindred clubs Ho complimented Commodore A. B. Round on the profipccfs of a bright, active season. The Canterbury Rowing Association's aire! annual report states that tho past season must bo considered a most satisfactory a.nd c uccGssful one. Thft financial position was somewhat less satisfactory than last year, the. balance at credit being only £i lis id. This was, however, duo to the exceptionally heavy expenditure, the revenue having been well maintained. The receipts for tho year totalled £B9 2s, including a. balance brought forward of JE39 17s, and the expenditure totalled £B4 10s Bd. The question of the improvement of tho Vvon had received a- feood deal of attention durin" tho vear, and the necessity for a comprehensive scheme of river improvement now appeared to be generally recognised. F'om a rowing point of view the first consideration was, of course, the deepening of the river, which would no doubt necessitate some form of dredging being adopted. The sport of rowing was, and liad been for many years, greatly handicapped by the absence of a sufficient depth of water, and tho time was looked: forward to when it would be possible to have a, mile_ eourso on the lower rer.ehes of the Avon,, wide wiough. to accommodate throe boats . racing abro&st.
