The secretary of the Xorth Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has received advice that the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers are rising and will not be fishable duriDg the week-end. The lecture in the W.E.A. rooms tonight will be given by Professor A. Wall, of Canterbury College The subject will be "The Anglo-Saxon Epic our National Heritage." The lecture will be illustrated by lantern slides showing the ships, weapons, armour, language, and other antiquities of the early Anglo-Saxon race. The lecture is open to the public. To-morrow, at .°> p.m., in the Crystal Palace Theatre, Mr John W. Poorly, C.5.8., of London, will deliver a free public lecture on "Christian Science." Mr Doorlv, who is lecturing in the interests of the Christian Scientists of Cliristehurch, is a member of the Beard of Lectureship of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist' in Boston, Massachusetts. This lecture is given under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Latimer square, Chrißtchurch. The funeral of the late Mr A. T. G. Symons took place at the Linwood Cemetery yesterday. The graveside service wag conducted by the Rev. W. MeAra, of Sumner, and a number of wreaths were sent, including one from the Citizens' Defence Corps. The pallbearers were: Messrs R. M. Mitchell, Charles Wood, W. E. D. Bishop, J. A. Poulton, and R. 11. Swindells. Amongst those present was Mr Georg» Harper (president of the Citizens' Defence Corps) and several members of that body, representatives of the staffs of the Ranncrualc Home and Sanatorium, and a large number of prominent citizens and returned soldiers. Mr Bransby Williams, whose impersonations of Dickens characters have so charmed North Island audiences, and who is a Rotarian of years' standing, was the guest at the Wellington Rotary Club thin week.
