ATHLETICS.
TUG-OF-WAR COMPETITION. The Doric tua;-of-war competition, held in the Ardataine Hall on Thursday evening, attracted a very large gathering. There were three classes, 10st 71b, list 7lb, and catcli■wei'ghts. Excellent arrangements Md teen made, and the competition was keen. M««rs Cromie Bros., of had installed their electric light device, -which showed distinctly, by means of coloured lights, which side had "the advantage each -contest. The officials were:—Judge, Mr 3. Connolly; joint secretaries, Messrs H. Harrison «nd L. Cordner; referees, Messrs *VY. Luraman a>nd D. McKie; starter, Mr E. Fox; timekeeper, Mr J. .Beard; bla-ckboard steward, My A. A. Oliver. The following arc the results*:— CATCH-WEIGHTS. Mit-cham beat Vfoolston after a well-con-tested pull by nearly two inches. ? Beach Combers beat Tattcrson by 1J inches. In the final Mitcliam teat Beach Combers. In this pull Mitcnam had the advantage from the beginning, and won by 3 inches. Tho winners were: —T. Small, J. Davison, son., J. Davison, j'un., F. Thompson, P. Hampton, A. Stewart (skip). LIGHT-WEIGHTS. Banks Bros, beat Beach Combers easily by 4 inches. "Mead beat Lyndhurst by 3 inches. Tattcrson beat Chertsey by 3 inches. Curroy beat McPhail in a strenuous pull bv 1 inch. "in the semi-final Banku Bros, beat Mead by 3 inches, Woolston bc;it Tattejson after a good pull by -2 inches, a Ixl Woolston beat Ciutcv ca-?U v by 3 inches. In the final Woolston beat Banks Bros. This was the best pijll of the evening. First one side and then t-he other had the advantage, Woolston winning by 4-inch. The winners were:—C. Smelling, B. McKenzie, A. Evans, G. Swanatou, iH. Brown, F. Bl*kcwav (skin.). LIGHT-WEIGHTS. Woolston beat J. Langtefy easily by 6 inches. Volunteers beat Dunstan after a. good pui! bv 3 inches. 'Hooper Bros, beat W. TmttcrSon easily by 4 inches. Mead beat Woolston by i-inch a.ftcr cm exciting pull, Srat one eide and then tho other having the advantage. In the semi-final Beach Combers beat Volunteer.? by 2 inches, After having had the advantage throughout. Hooper Bfos. beat Mead easily by o inches. In the Fiinal Hooper Bras, beat Beach Combers by 5 inches rather easily. The winners were the five JfoopSr brothers, of Mitchatn. Mr A. Stewart iros 6kip. An extra, contest w«s pulled between Dunsin n's team and Volunteers for a trophy given by Mr Hsuikin. of Christchurch. Alter a good pull Volunteers won. At the close Mr J. Connolly presented the prizes, and thanked tho cotftpetifcors, Messrs C'romie Broe. for ireo of their electric device, and the ladies for their in supplying supper.
