PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO "TKI r**ss.") GKEYMOUTH, October 3. Mr and Mrs G. Breeze, of Asho'irton, intend visiting the Franz Josef CJr.eier at the week-cud. Xurse Groom has resided fmui the staff of the Grey River Hospital. Mr John Maher, n pioneer contractor, died yesterday at the O'Connor Home, "Westport. Mr V. Danks, of Millerton, underwent a serious operation at the Westport Hospital to-day. Constable Fooler ■was presented by the Millerton Wanderers' Football Club "with a gold watch and chain, and by the Millerton Ladies' Hoekey Club and Boxing Association with a gold Eversharp pencil and gold fountain-pen on the ere of his departure for Blenheim on transfer. Messrs Melnroe and Faulkner, both of whom were admitted to the Grey River Hospital suffering from injuries received in accidents, arc making satisfactory progress. Watersiders Idle. Very few vessels arrived in port during the week, and a large number of watersiders were idle, but an improvement is expected within a few <iLi;'S. Greymouth Jockey Club. It was resolved to adopt the programme of last year for the forthcoming meeting. Subsequently a meeting of the District Committee was held, the same members attending, with the exception of Messrs Smith and James. The following programmes were approved:—Westland Racing Club, December 26th and 27th, stakes £2OOO. Reef ton .T.C'., January 6th and 7th, 1925, stakes £1640„ Automobile Association. Harley retary)A letter was received from the Barrytown branch of the Farmers' Union asking for the branch's donation towards the cost of building Carrol Creek bridge, now in course. of erection. It was decided to pay the quota on receipt of a report as to the cost from Mr J. Higgins, County Engineer. In response to a letter from the Town Clerk,' Brunner, in reference t"> the fencing of portion of the railway line, the branch decided to make en.y.irias as to the cost of the timber necessary and have the work done. It was resolved to ask the Railway Department to place a warning signal at the crossing at the foot of Kiwi Hill, near Brunner ton.

The secretary was instructed tj write thanking the Kumara Borough Council for repairing the road to Sandy 'a. Hill. Messrs H. Langridge, P. M. Boustridge, and Captain M. A Stedman •were elected new members. It was decided to recommend that one-way traffic to Victoria Park be instituted on race days between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. Pishing Season. Mr W. Gamble (Greymouth) was the first local angler to catch trout in the new season. He succeeded in landing three fish, the largest of which was just under 21b. Hokitika Exhibition. The final meeting of the Hokitika Exhibition executive was held last evening, Mr W. J. Butler presiding over an attendance ofj eight members. Congratulations on the success of the Exhibition were received from the Westland branch of the Canterbury Progress League. A letter was received from the Minister of Defence notifying a grant of £SO for renovating the interior of the Drill Hall, less £l3 10s due for rent. A suggestion from the Dunedin Exhibition executive that a district or provincial court be established was referred to the winding-up meeting of guarantors. The treasurer reported that the receipts to date were £8533, with assets valued at £l3O to be realised, and the payments had been £8576 !)s 6d. Arrangements were made for the realisation of the remaining assets In Bankruptcy. Arthur Jas. Bradley, of Westport, fruiterer, has filed a petition in bankruptcy. A New Lighthouse. ■ The wooden lighthouse at Cape Foulwind is to be replaced by an up-to-date concrete structure. Greymouth School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth School Committee was held tonight, Mr J. Tennent presiding. Miss Ellen Moore was appointed infant mistress on tho recommendation of the Education Board. The rector reported that continuous wet weather and an epidemic of whooping cough had affected the attendance, which was still much below normal. The average for the month at tho two schools was 602 out of a roll of 702.
