HEALTH WEEK.
ADJOURNED UNTIL MAY NEXT. A meeting of the Health Week Committee, comprising delegates irom local bodies, was held m the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Cr. W. H. Winsor presiding over a good attendance. In his opening remarks, the chaiitnan said the Sumner Borough Council was not in sympathy with the campaign, and was taking no interest in the matter. It was proposed to hold rli* campaign during the third week in October. Mr \V. E. Lea-iioy said they should g<~i further than the sending out a pamphlet. The movement was a worldwide' one. and if they were not prepared to go further with it. then there was something wrong with local bodies. Tuev should spend more tune and in an effort to prevent diseases. He hoped they would be able to arrange a series of lectures from prominent doctors. and window displays and placards calling the ■;intention of the people to the most prevalent diseases and how to avoid them. Nurse Maude said lectures would be r.o good unti 1 Ihey took the first step and made r>eop!e pay attention to t'resu air in their houses. Landlords should b'j '■ compelled ,to keep the windows open. Mr H. J. Otley said the Health Department should send a man to every door and make the people clean nut their places. There should be no trouble in getting statutory authority, if necessary, to compel, people to keep their dwellings clean. If such authority could not be secured then it was a disgrace to the community. The Rev. Clyde C'arr said the landlords were not always to blame. The windows would rpen all right, but the people • would not open them. They should incorporate the appeal for fresh air with . lectures by doctors. The chairman said they had several excellent suggestions before them, but the only tangible thing they had was £25 from the City Council. Who else was there to pay for the campaign? Mr H. J. Otley said he had not muuh faith in lectures. They would not get the attendances. Mrs E. B. if ('..Combs spoke of the measures taken in Sydney in this connexion in the way of window displays. She considered that a display by the Health Department would carry a great deal of weight. Mr J. Gamble said New Brighton would give all the support possible. He could not actually promise financial support, but ho was sure New Brighton was in sympathy with the scheme. Mr H. n. Holland; are getting good at curing, but what about prevention?. Dr. P. S. Foster said the Medical Association was willing to give lectures, but he did not think they would be much good. It would be better to organise a drive to clean up the whole city. -Dr. T. F. Telford said .they could not make bricks without straw. Where was the money, coming from? Finally; it was decided to adjourn the meeting- until May 3rd, i and to postpone all further efforts with the exception of issuing a pamphlet. The following committee was set up to confer with Mr E. H. Marriner as to the matter to be inserted in the pamphlet:—Dr. Telford, Nurse Maude, Mrs Bristed,. Rev. Clyde C'arr, and Mr W. E. Leadley. .
