NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Personal. The Xcw Brighton Club held its annual meeting last Wednesday, -when Mr R. C. Bishop was elected president for the thirtieth year in succession. This is claimed to be a record. Mr A. McClure, Town Clerk, is recovering from his recent operation, and expects to resume duty 011 November Ist. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble") has be an elected to represent the borough at the Municipal Conference to be held in Auckland at the end of October. On Wednesday a marriage of local interest was celebrated at the Beach Church by Canon Bean, when Wilfred George Goodman was married to Rose Agnes (Poppy; Bellamy. A reception was afterwards held at the home of Mrs Bellamy (Lonsdale street). Mr J. H. Gilmour is visiting friends at Xcw Brighton. Mr and Mrs A. P. Hopkins are visiting Wellington. Euchre Evenings. The New Brighton Croquet Club a very successful euchre party in the Parish Room on Thursday last. The prizes, given by Mesdames Blunt, Nicholla, and Luxton, were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Scott 1, Mrs Stevenson 2; gentlemen: Mr Winter 1, Mr Cooke 2. The consolation prizes went to Mrs Fitchett and Mr Roy Smith. The Beresford Club held its weekly euchre party and dance in the Anglican Church room on Tuesday. The prizewinners were Mesdames Hill and Scott, and Messrs Derrett and Pocoek. After cards the floor was cleared fv dancing. The fortnightly euchre party was held in the hall, South Brighton, last Wednesday. The prize-winners were Mesdantes Xankerville and Betty limes, Miss Grammer, and Messrs Guntripp and Robinson. After supper a committee was formed, consisting of Mesdames Rogers and Mcllroy, and Messrs Campbell, Grammer, Mcllroy, and Orsborn. to consider the means of disposing of funds accumulated during the season, as the aggregate closes on October loth. The following committee was formed to manage the next function: Mesdames Xankerville and Innes, and Messrs Guntripp and Robinson. Inter-Borough Shooting Contest. Xew Brighton,«in the miniature Title match, Cadets v. Sumner Cadets, won by 567 points to 542. Teams of ten were engaged, the eight best scores to count. A feature was the shooting of Cadet Bennett, who put on ten bullseves in succession. This lad made a possible in the Company's musketry course, scoring the full 120 for the Godlev Cup and medal. At the donclusion of the match, which added another point to New Brighton's credit in the interborough contest, the teams were enter- • tained to supper. Gala and Fete Affairs. Matters in connexion with the appointment of an organiser for the summer programme are held up pending a decision being given by the committees of the gala and fete as to the manner and terms of utilising that official's services. The Churches. The preacher at the morning service at the Methodist Church to-morrow will be Mr Cumberbeach. At C.30 the Rev. F. T. Read will conduct the services, and the choir, under Mr B. Taylor, will give the anthems "0, Gladsome Light," and "Hark, Hark my Soul." Holy Communion will follow the service. Much to the regret of the choir and congregation, Mr Taylor is leaving Brighton, and at the close of the practice on Thursday evening addresses of appreciation were given by Mr Holloway on behalf of the choir, and Messrs J. Cooke and J. Buxton on behalf of the trustees and congregation. Mr Read also spoke, and on behalf of the choir presented Mr Taylor with a copy of the' Methodist Tune Book. The ladies handed round supper. The Rev C. W. I. MacLaverty will conduct services at the Beach Church to-morrow, and the Rev. W. F. Knowles will take the evening service at North Beach ' schoolroom. The vestry is arranging another euchre party for next "Wednesday evening in the schoolroom. The concert given by the Kiwi Sunshine Players in Joyland last Saturday evening was a complete success, the takings constituting a record for the parish. The net return to date is £l9 lis 9d, and further small sums arc expected. At the Presbyterian Church to-mor-row, the morning subject will be a review of the teachings of Scripture on the true use of the Lord's Day, The evening subject will be "The Christian's Hope at Death." The evening services will now commence at 7 instead of 6.30 o'clock. The Literary Society spent an interesting evening with Kipling last Saturday, when Mr F. Lee gave a resume of the character of Kipling's works and his place in literature.
