CRIMINALS FROM ABROAD.
INFLUX TO AUSTRALIA. The increasing influx: of foreign criminals, especially those of Italian extraction, is giving some' concern to the Australian police. Recent arrests have produced a large crop of low-class Italian criminals, and they are believed to be behind the outbreak of crime which the Sydney police have been fighting for months past. With every batch of reputable Italians that lias arrived in Australia for years _ come two or threaof these undesirables, until the congregation of them is making its influence felt, especially in criminal pursuits. The case of Giomi Menotti is an example. arrived in Australia more than live years ago, and since that time the police say that the honest jobs he has filled could be written comfortably on the back of a tram ticket. H 9 committed a robbery, and, when chased by a constable, fired several shots at his pursuer, narrowly missing the mark. He was arrested eventually, and was sentenced to 14 years' penal servitude. .. Two other Italians arrested recently arj said to have been responsible for much of. the .safe-blowing in the metropolitan area; and are known members of a gang of idle young ruffians who are blamed for many cases of violent assault and robbery.
