The Council of the New Zealand Amat ?£ Swimming Association met last evening, Ju* W E D. Bishop presiding. There were aioo present-Messrs- J. "W. Toomey (Canterbury), W.-H. Benson (Otago), F; G. Dunn Soutdi Canterbury), A. L. Wilkinson (Taranaki), C. Bryant (Wanganui), J. Jackson .(Hawke s Jtf.ay). and B. O'Neill ("Wellington). The manner of securing a new type of championship medal. and a new type of schools cnampionship. medal was referred to the medals committee." ... . . Regarding, the Olympic. Fund, Mr Benson reported that the final payments of expenses with respect to the ewhnming competitors had not yet -been made. Mr it. G. Button, Ashhurst, wrote suggesting that instead .of certificates as at present. issued to school children for distance swimming,' the Council should issue badges or buttons. These,' he considered, would provide a better' incentive to the children' than did the certificates.. Mr Benson: I think we are justifying our existence by the issue of the certificates. The secretary reported that he had informed. Mr'Hutton that the matter would necessarily be. determined by the cost of badges as compared with that of certificates. It was decided that 'Mr Hutton be thanked for his suggestion, but that it be pointed out that the. cost, of badges would make them -prohibitive. • The Ashburton Club wrote stating that it was desired that..a centre- should be formed for Ashburton.-. It was considered thatwa» the only way in which ewimming could be properly encouraged in the district. Thpro were three clubs in existence, and l •it was hoped to form others. The secretary reported- that he had replied stating that' such a, proposal would be received sympathetically" by the Council end recommending that the application should be made early in the season. • The secretary's'reply was approved. Mr W. H. Benson was delegated to proceed to Wellington to be present at the carrilvsi to take place there on Monday next, - when Charlton and others of the Australian Olynv pic swimming team will participate. Following on his earlier report that the water polo championship, banner was beyond repair, Mr Benson recommended that enquiries should -be made with a view to securing another trophy,. preferably in the form of a silver polo. ball.—The recommendation was; adopted.
It was decided that the Canterbury Centre be-communicated with drawing attention to the breaches in recent years of the rule which. stipulates that competitors at championship meetings must wear the colours of their centre. The Canterbury Centre is to be asked to insist on the observance of =this rule at the "vett, cbampi' , T\ship meeting. It was also decided that other centres he c"mmunicated with on the matter. ■Mr Toomey stated that the Canterbury Centre had discussed the advisability of competitors wearing distinctive caps.—The Council expressed approval of the suggestion. °°
