CITY RATES.
TO THX EDITOB OP "THE PRESS." Sir,—l was surprised on receiving my demand notice to find a further increase- of about 121 per cent, over last year, ajid it certainly appears very evident that ratepayers can only expect an annual increase, instead of reduction as jtromised by the various candidates prior to Council elections. One wonders when it will stop. When a member of the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association, I heard a lot of talk and promisesabout what th© Association would do if its nominees were elected to the Council, but results so far as th© rates are concerned have been quite out of proportion to the talk, and I have come to the conclusion that instead of paying a guinea to listen to platitudes, I coula apply this money more usefully to paying some of tho increase in mv rates, as it is quite apparent that the rates are not likely to be reduced, through the Citizens' Association, whose "ticket" has proved a blank. I am quite sure that a very large number of ratepayers will vole, very differently at the next Council election, as a protest against the present Council's further increase in the rates.—Yours,'etc., RATEPAYER. September ISth, 1924.
