NORTH BEACH NOTES.

A further working bee was held in the school grounds last Saturday afternoon, when the much-needed . repairs were carried out. On Monday evening a well-attended meeting of ladies was held to make plans for the forthcoming bazaar in aid of the School Ground Improvement Fund. It was reported that Mr C. Dixon had kindly offered to place "Saltaire" at the disposal of the School Committee for the bazaar. It was agreed to hold the bazaar early in November.

A social was held in the school on Tuesday evening as a "kick-off" to the , Gala Campaign, the object being more of a social nature than, a financial veilture. The function was one of the merriest ever held in the school, the attendance being good ahd the fun fast and,furious.' A novel guessing competi; tion provided considerable amusement', being won by Mr K. Snell. A splendid musical programme, arranged by Mr Instone, was greatly enjoyed, all the items being encored. Songs were given by Messrs Murray Jones and V. Peters, Misses A. West and Instone, and recitations by Mr Instone "and Miss Sherwood. Mrs Taylor, Miss Knowles and Mr Lilly acted* as pianists. A dainty supper was provided -by the- ladies. A meeting of the Gala Committee was held in the Surf Club Pavilion' on Wednesday night, when there were present: Messrs Leaver (in the chair), Scott (secretary), Mesdames Leverett, Wilson, | McGillivray, Leaver, Taylor, Thompson, Hutton, Alleway, Barker, Snell, Messrs D. Wilson, J. F.' Wilson, Mallasch, Hutton, White, Snell, Alleway, Bowles, and Norrie. It was reported that the selection of queens was not yet made and it; was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the Ladies' Committee. Mrs Leverett was appointed convener of the Bowhill Road Committee, and Mrs D. Wilson of the Esplanade Queen's Committee. In regard to the gala it was agreed that each queen's committee be allowed to run any project they wish on Gala Day, the proceeds to go to | the particular queen on whose behalf the effort is made. Officers for the 1924 gala were then appointed as foli lows: —Chairman, Mr E. A. M. Leaver; organising secretary, Mr F. J. Laurence Scott; executive, Messrs Snell, Hutton, Gundrv, J. F. Wilson, Barker and D. Wilson; treasurer, Mr N. McGillivray. Arrangements for Gala Day, December | 26th, were then discussed, and it was decided to hold a mock court, an openair concert, a fancy dress procession, a mock wedding, a male beauty competition and a female beauty competition. It was agreed to hold the school championship races as was done last year, the programme to be drawn up by Mr Wilson, of North Beach School, and Mr Scott, of Main Brighton School. It was decided to ask the Surf Club to hold the usual surf events. The ladies present expressed a wish that a maypole dance be put on, and it was decided to take steps to arrange for one if possible. Band arrangements were held over pending a report from the chairman. Greasv pole and pillow fight competitions were left in the hands I of Messrs Brand, Bowles and White. Other attractions were, discussed, but nothing was settled. It was arranged that the crowning of the winning queen should not take place till the schools re-opened after the Christmas holidays, though the queen carnival will end on the night of the gala. The next meeting was arranged for Wednesday, October Ist. 8 Mrs Cole, of North Beach, who is captain of the newly-formed Brighton • Girl. Guide troop, organised.a. very sue- ? I cessful bazaar of the troop funds.

Mrs Cole was assisted by Lieutenant Miss Patrick, a number of parents of the Guides and other volunteers, and also the senior guides. Tlio bazaar i.onsisted of a flower stall, a produce stall and a jumble stall, while an afternoon tea room on a dry nor'-west afternoon was much appreciated and well As a. result, of the afternoon's work the funds will benefit to the extent of over £lO, of which a percentage is to be given to the Boy Scouts in recognition of their assistance. The Brighton School Drum and Fife Band played selections during the afternoon. It is proposed to form a good strong troop committee to back up the work, and for that purpose a meeting of parents is to be held at Mrs Cole's house, North Beach, at an early date.
