Salo of Work. Yc-tcrdav afternoon a sale of-.work organised bv the Ladies' Guild of tho Congregational Church, was opened by tho flavor (Mr r; - Wallace). In iho course of bis remarks tho Mayor expressed his appreciation of the enormous amount of work which tho Rev T Wilson Potts had don© and was still doing for the people of Timaru and South Canterbury. In reference to the call received by Mr Potts from Devonport, the Mayor said ho hoped that the rev. gentleman would see his way to remain in Timaru, though the people of Desvonport would bo tho losers. Tha following were in charge of the various stalls:—Work stall, MSsdames T. W. Potts, A. G. Hamilton, and F. Nelson; produce, Mesdames Willmott and Best; caie, Meedames McJennett. and Tubb; sweets, Misses Cossrove and Potts; jelly, 31 re Provan and Miss A. Bowden; Christmas tree, Misses Burford, Bowden and Knowles; tea rooms, Mesdames Higgins, Hill, Taylor, and Millin, Misses Waterhouse and Parfoot. bran tubs, 31asters W. McJennott and A. Provan. Several guessing competitions were held in conjunction with the stalls, and those Th charge were kept extremely busy. Last evening the salo was continued, and an enjoyable concert was held.

Fire Board. The quarterly meeting of the Timaru Firo Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs W. C. Raymond (chairman), J. F. Griereon, C. J. Cooper, J. Hole and A. G. Foster.

The chairman expressed his appreciation of the work done by members.' The year had been a heavy one so far as firo fighting was concerned, and the brigade had saved property worth a large sum. The secretary said the estimates had been made up and totalled £2250. The Borough Council's share of this would be £llOO. " The Christchnrch Fire Board wrote that the Minister would not alter the end of the financial year to March 31st. The Board also stated that the consensus of opinion of other Boards regarding a. conference was) that it would hare no effect, and the matter had been dropped. The Superintendent (_\fr P. Campbell) submitted bis eleventh annual report, which stated that the. Brigade started • the year with 25 members. .During the year threo" resigned and two joined, leaving twenty-four on- the roll at'present. Tho Brigade had held 20 wet practices and four meetings, and had also turned out. for inspection by .Inspector Hugo. D"rine the rear the Brigade bad responded to 46 alarms of . fire. 19 moro tha.n in , the previous year.

Alarms received by telephone totalled 31, and by street alarm L">. The majority of the fires occurred between the hours of 8.15 p.m. and 11.30 a.m. The most serious occurred on Tuesday. November 13th, 1923, the Silo flour mil! being destroyed. The .total "fire loss for tho year was £18,130. A Dangerous Corner. The junction of Hewlings, Stafford, and Evans streets and Wa/i-iti road is the scene of frequent narrow escapes from collisions between motor-cars and other vehicles. Yesterday morning two motor-cars, a motor truck, and. a carrier's express waggon foregathered, unexpectedly at the corner,, and only skilful handling, perhaps assisted by the fluency of the carrier, averted a. nasty smash. The horses' heads ended. up on the lorry's load, and the cars slid past with only inches to spare. New Tennis Club. At a, large meeting of ci-pupils of the Timaru High Schools, held on Wednesday ";niglit, to discuss-a-proposal for the taking over of the management of the Wai-iti Tennis Club, it was reported that the canvass for prospective members had resulted in the enrolment of 51, which, together with tho present membership of the club, would bring the total up to 104. After some discussion it was decided that tho proposals contained in a letter from the Wai-iti Tennis Club for the taking over of the management of the club should be accepted.

GERALDINE, A meeting of ladies in connexion, with St. Anna's Guild, Ghristchurch, was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Tea having been served by the ladies. Sister Margaret and Mrs Harrison Bcgg, of St. Anno's Guild, were introduced by Mrs Burdon, and both spoke interestingly- of the work of the guild. It was explained that work and amusements were arranged with a view to the uplifting ofe the girls, and that the evening pro-' grammes included cards on Mondays, music by Mrs Turner on Tuesdays, guild meeting and the teaching of needlework on Wednesdays, gramophone and plain sewing on Thursdays, and Bible class, with instruction, on Fridays. It was stated that the girls were trained in household duties, and performed the housework and attended to the garden. They also made mats on a loom, utilising waste pieces of material, and it was incidentally mentioned that suitable pieces would be welcome. Mr Harrison Begg, in the course of her speech, made interesting .comparisons between the work of the guild and that done in the slums of London. It having been explained that it was desired to arouse interest in outside districts, it was resolved by the meeting to establish a helping branch in Geraldine, with Mrs Burdon as president. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Sister Margaret and Mrs Harrison Begg on the motion of Mrs Turton.
