RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.
SOUTH CANTERBURY MAN OTAGO NOMINEE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TKMSGBAM.} DUNEDIN, September 16. At the meeting of the Otago University Council to-day, advice was received from the Professorial Board that Mr W. J. Scott had been nominated as the Otago candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship this year. Mr Scott, who is an Arts student, was born at Hilton, South Canterbury. He received his primary education at the Hilton Public School, and continued his studies at the Timaru Boys' High School, where he gained Junior and Senior National Scholarships, and a University Entrance Scholarship. He was head house prefect at the Timaru Boys' High School. Entering Otago University in 1922, he won a first class in English terms, and in 1923 won a first class in Education and a second class in Advanced English and Advanced Latin.
FINE ATHLETIC RECORD. (SPECIAL TO "TKE PBX88.") DUNEDIN, September 16,
Mr W. J. Scott, who has been selected as the Otago nominee for the Rhodes Scholarship, is a fine all-round athlete. He represented the Timaru Boys' High School at Rugby, and was also boxing champion of the school. Last autumn he won both Otago and New Zealand University Blues in athletics, and in the doing established new records in the high jump for Otago University (sft 7in) and for the New Zealand University (sft 7Jin). On the administrative»side of University life, Mr Scott is vice-president of the Arts Faculty Students' Association vice-president of the Christian Union, and a member of the executive of the Knox College Students' Club.
