NEW ZEALAND AT WEMBLEY.
TO THE EDITOR 0? "THE rEESS. Sir, —Much may have been said pro and con in cold print as to this Dominion's display at the Great Exhibition, but the photographs which gne the actual-view of things faithfully iu every respect as revealed to the camera cannot be questioned. I refer to that "Thrilling reproduction of the light at Orakau" —a staged, scene of Maoris resisting Imperial troops. The British soldiers have slipped off the plate, but the Maoris arc supposed to be all there. The scene is not more than what a party of kids might have attempted on a piece of. waste land. exhibition of July 20th of the 2scw" Zealand section of The Pageant of Empire that '' attracted enormous crowds.-' The leading native in the foreground with, a Snider rifle and s'word bayonet gives the show away, being in full :drcsß and perhaps a top coat on under his heavy flax mat. At the Orakan affray the Maoris wore only war paint and a very light coating of that. The absence from the pictures reproduced in Auckland have no rough hills or the

palisading and bosh which lac native reinforcements occupied when on the warpath. Who ever heard of a Maori battle with only a few flax leaves for cover or a decayed cabbage tree stump. The New Zeafanders present at the for the night and said the whole ehov? wa3 putrid or something. Up to tho present the "thrilling production r ' has not been mentioned in Parliament ad it oueht to have been. —Yours, etc., P.B.P.
